I'm pretty sure the work intervals for tabata are only supposed to last 4 minutes total.
You're supposed to be going at all-out intensity. I doubt you could keep that up for 20 second intervals over 40 minutes. If you can, props to you.

each one lasts 4 mins yes then i took a small break moving to next one i did 7 or eight exercises
I did two 6 week cycles on tabata. Youre right each exercise is pretty much exactly 4 min. For me it didnt do much, like you said it hands your back end to you, but other than being sore for a quarter of a year i didnt get the results i wanted. Muscle gain was minimum. Now sometimes i'll throw one of these workouts in my routine just to keep things interesting.
Guess it depends what youre looking for.
