I utilized that a lot during the first probably 4-5 years in the gym. these days after warming up sufficient after my first exercise I usually only do 1 warm up set on the next exercise just to refresh my form then jump right into my working sets. over the years I found at at least for myself that I wasted a lot of time in energy constantly pyramiding up to working loads.
I train differently than most, my beef is with gravity the weights on the bar are just the medium...Thanks to Wall Street your slice of the American Pie has been reduced to a crumb.

Depends on what your goals are.
Goal: 8% Body Fat, maintain majority of muscle mass
New Years Resolution: stick to a fitness and diet plan that works long term.

I'm with LAM. Pyrimiding may seem like a good idea at first, but in practice a bit of warm up and moving right on to the work just makes more sense.
