I'm sure a large portion of it was water. The reason it is said that you should be losing weight slower is because if you drop weight too fast your body will start burning up muscle as well. Calorie cycling will help with this however.
When you restrict calories too much, your metabolism will slow down to compensate because it will fight you tooth and nail for those emergency fat reserves. So going for 3-4 days low on calories and maybe even carbs as more protein will help keep your appetite down, then do 1-2 refeed days of about 700 calories above maintenance with carbohydrates, then back to low calories for 3-4 days.
This will help keep your metabolism burning high. This is basically what I do.
