Do deadlifts work the lats?
also when u consider the back is a large muscle group and to gain good hypertrophy 12 sets is optimal, do you consider the lat muscle itself for say 12 sets or do you also consider traps spinal erectors etc in the 12 set catorgory?
so a typicall back routine would be 4 sets of deadlifts for pulldowns and 4 bentover rows, would this be enough to hit the lats sufficiently, i know trps will get hit hard with deads and rows anyway so lats are my main concern?

Deadlifts are considered a mass-builder for the back if someone is lacking thickness. It will hit your upper back, since the upper back muscles are used as stabilizers for the lift. The primary muscles involved in the lift are your lower back (spinal erectors), hamstrings, glutes and adductors.

Deads will build you thick and wide from stem to stern.

the ONLY way to effectively stimulate any muscle is to exercise that muscle over it's entire range of motion. think of the dead as working the back as in a static contraction, the muscles of the back are activated but neither really actively lengthened or shortened.
you might feel DOMS in the chest days after deads for a similar reason. the traps are used as a dynamic stabilizer during the DL with the opposing muscle of the traps being the pecs. remember muscles always work in pairs just don't forget the many different ways in which they work
