Do you drop the weight? At my school we got those rubber bouncing plates for oly lifts and our couch tell us to drop the weight so we don't hurt our backs putting them down.

"A child does not learn to squat from the top down -- in other words, he does not suddenly make a conscious decision one day to squat. Actually, he is squatting one day and makes the conscious decision to stand." - Gray Cook
Yep. They are constructed with the intent of being dropped.

Bumper plates are nice.

This is correct. There really is no "negative" to a power clean (other then from above-head press to shoulders if you wanted to). Bringing the bar to the ground won't do anything for you other then put you at risk for injury and burn energy. By all means, drop the fucker

hell yes you drop the weight. not only to avoid injury but also to preserve as much energy possible for the clean motion. once you get to heavier weights you'll see that lowering the bar without dropping it is almost as taxing as the clean itself.
