Press Ups, slow or fast?

i have been trying to figure out for some time now if press ups prove more effective if done slowly or fast.

How do many press ups should i be doing?
At what speed?

Help much appreciated!

Are we talking about push-ups here? I that case, they really are only used by BB'er to warm up or get pumped for competitions etc. Bench presses involves a simular movement.

I hope I haven't misunderstood you totally and made a fool of myself

In the UK push ups are called press ups.

The reason i asked is because my weights bench is broken and i have ordered a new one that won't be here for another three weeks. So i wanted to do a similar sort of exercise.

There are two options:

1) press up wish tremendous force...this will be an explosive movement to improve power

OR

2) in a bodubuilding sense..press up slowly but forcefully while concentrating on feeling the squeeze in your chest

Answer...depends on your training goal...if power then press forcefully...if bodybuilding...slow and controlled with peak contraction

I try to push myself as far off of the ground as possible on the way up, and then lower myself with a count of about four. I only do six reps. Not for any real reason, except to maybe avoid fatigue. I've been mixing them into a circuit style warmup preworkout.
