Got asked an interesting question at the gym today.......
When doing BB DB shrugs is it better to roll your shoulders or lift them straight up and down??
I always lift em up and down.

I think you can reazlly do some damage to your rotator cuff
when "rolling" your shoulders with ample weight ..
"When the going gets though,
the Tough get Duct-tape!"
I always go straight up and down. I've heard the same about damaging your rotator cuff by rolling the shoulders.
Another question - do you guys do bb shrugs in front or in the back? I did it in the back for the first time the other day and I can still feel it in my traps. I'm trying to figure out if it's due to the shock of a new method or just that behind the back is much more effective?
Yup, straight up and down is the way to do'em.
Brad, I wonder if like doing pulldowns or military press behind the head, maybe doing shrugs behind the back is also bad for your shoulders as well? I'm not sure but I would almost think so.
Cool![]()
Hadn't thought about that, but it could be a possibility. I will keep that in mind, and see what else I can find out. Thanks for the info, Scotty.

Definately up and down, rolling the shoulders is asking for injury. I see many newbies using this though thinking they are somehow covering more of the trap. I like to lean forward ever so slightly (you almost have to with a barbell), and thats about it for techique, up and down up and down.

up and down, and when you get to the top make sure your getting a good squeeze[contraction], and when your at the bottom get a good stretch.try static holds for a great trap workout![]()

yeah that works too......Just three others because he is hmmmmm
how to put this delicatley, he gets really weird and strange ideas about how weight should be lifted (not that this is a weird one) and refuses to beleive me when I offer another way...
An example Of something he does which I find strange and can see no benefeit to other than a good stretch.....
This fella likes to do an entire warm up set with just a weightless bar, 4 sets of 15 repetitions.......in a very, very slow manner, it takes him approximatley 20 minutes to get done this odd display.

Up and down is definiteyl the only way to go. Just like everyone else said, if you are rolling the shoulder you are just asking for an injury.
And Brad, I do traps behind the back about every three back workouts. IMO i think they work great and I have not had any shoulder problems as of yet (knock on wood!) and I beleive that it is just like hitting the trap from another angle. Just like changing your grip on other workouts. I hope they dont cause shoulder problems becasue they work great for me!!
I remember in the 80's seeing everyone in the gym rolling their shoulders for trap workouts, LOL. I guess we learned it was bad to do that from them.
My trap workout consist of: front or behind barbell and side dumbell shrugs, with up and down movements. I also feel a better pump when doing behind barbell shrugs.

I do straight up and down. But , I don't go all the way down.
I like to lean forward so slightly.

Good idea Vale Tudo. I might mix it up a little, try every other time or every third time like you. I've only done it behind a couple of times, but haven't experienced any negative shoulder effects yet. Although like Scotty said, it might have a negative effect. I guess I'll just have to use some care (as long as I'm not rolling the shoulders!)

I'm not! I'm just basing it on all the other threads I have read. Then you light in on the mods?? I've been silent on all this, because I too think everyone deserves to voice an opinion. And I must agree you come off very strong! Maybe you just need to be careful how you word things?Originally posted by Training God

As for the question, trust someone with rotator cuff problems. Don't roll your shoulders.
Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.
The difference between winners and losers is that winners do things that losers don't want to do.
