Well gaining a lot weight would decrease speed because you have to worker harder to move all that extra mass. But I don't feel like working out has effected my speed much at all. Although I am slow and don't pay much attention to speed anyway.

It is really pretty simple for you right now - you are young (if I recall correctly) and gaining weight is likely still something you need to do to be a good athlete, especially in football.

For a person at your relative experience level, the weight you gain will likely be muscle and it won't hurt you at all. To be fast you need to be strong. A lot of people don't understand this but it's true.

To get faster you want to focus on cleans, squats, and deadlifts. These are all going to help you improve the force with which you can press against the ground.

But upper body strength is another important physical trait to be developed in football players.

Seriously, just do Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe. Either get the book or find the program. The book will likely answer all of your questions. The program will set you on the right path and put everything in order for you.

do not worry about this. to be a good fb player you need to be strong. you dont want to be a boy among men out there cause i can guarantee you this, your opponents are weight training to get ready for next season. the worst thing you can do is compromise stregnth for speed. you need to be more in touch with your coaches AND successful upper classmen on your team - the proven playmakers. just keep workin. and by all means, keep asking questions. no question is a dumb question when your 15 and tryin to get better. keep pluggin lil bro

for the performance athlete typically you only see a real decrease in sports performance when the person gains a substantial amount of weight in a very short period of time or when over-training has occurred.
I train differently than most, my beef is with gravity the weights on the bar are just the medium...Thanks to Wall Street your slice of the American Pie has been reduced to a crumb.

Or (for some athletes) when a weight gain causes you to compete in a different class. Some weight-class athletes just perform best in a certain weight class.

But I don't think this is the case for the OP, so you are 100% correct.
