lower back problems

im 14 and awhile ago i started getting lower back problems after doing weights, it was very slight pains nothing major, bit i didnt want to take en risks, so i stopped for a few weeks, tryed again once, but no it still gave me slight pains. I've asked people for advice and they say carry on doing weights becuase it will make your back stronger and will stop it hurting.

But i decided to come here, for you guys professional advice

What do you think, should i carry on doing weights or stop?

(p.s the weights i do are quite light, its not that im over doing it)

Thnx

Do you have any numbness in your legs?
What kind of pain is it: sharp, dull?
Is it in the middle of your back or off to the side?

If you have back pain when you sit for extended periods of time but not when you lift then I would suggest lifting to strengthen your back. Since you're having the pain when you lift then I would suggest seeing a doctor.

What kind of exercise where you doing when you first noticed the pain, your form might be the problem or you may just need to strengthen your back and abs.

Stiff legged deadlifts, and do your situps, those are AWESOME for my back, I've had back problems since I was 11 or so (when a teacher decided to kick me in the back, a soccer instructor, school did nothing to him...)

U talking about clean and jerk? Meaning lifting BB then bringing it up to your chest. If thats what you're talking about lessen the weight and try to work through it. Like someone else posted situps are also a must. I also do side pulls with one DB at a time.

WIthout seeing what you're doing and how you're doing it's kind of hard to asses, but I would assume that it's your form.

I get a lot of lower back problems as well, like it is a constant ache some days and some days it is nothing. I wouldnt say that I have numbness in my legs, but on the outside sweep of my quads I dont feel much of anything. So yeah i guess there is some numbness there, I was thinking about seeing a chiropractor. What do yuo guys think

I also have lower back pain, mine started a few months ago while deadlifting, after that I had a hard time getting out of bed, pain ran down the lower back into my left glute and lower leg, I went to a chiropractor, it didn't really help. I kept ice on it and heat and after two weeks it got a little better, now I have started lifting again, the pain still comes back but not as bad.

I think chiro's are great when something's out of alignment but I think my problem was more deeper than that. It could also be the chiro, some really don't care about people and just want to get you in and out. I think that's part of why he didn't help me much.

I think you might have pulled something there PB, i had the same pain that went down one side and into my glute, it was caused by a strap that broke while in mid deadlift and caused a jerk to one side.
it took a couple months off deadlifting before it was gone.

Hows your guys abs? they can be the cause to many lower back problems.

Cool

My abs are hiding like a bear during hibernation.

I tried working on my abs but it also places stress on the lower back area and seems to aggravate the problem. Not as bad as it was so I have been trying to lose fat and strengthen the abs but it still hurts. I haven't deadlifted since and squats kind of set it off to. I am going slow but sure to try to work through it.

Do you still get back pain now? What did you do to relieve the pain?

No pain anymore, I just quit deadlifting for a few months and when I went back, I used a belt on my heaviest lifts for about a month and now I can lift 455 for reps again without a belt.

BP&J,
I had something very similar happen a few months ago while doing dead lifts. Well actually it started when I jumped off the back of a pick up about a year ago, I am not sure what it did but gave me a sore back for about a week that sent a pain down my right glute, and leg when I sat down or bent the worng way.

Then a couple months ago, while doing deads, I reinjured it. Same symptoms, but the pinching pain that goes down the glute and leg, I feel the pain the most in hip when pressure is first put on or taken off of the right leg, has not gotten better after about 3 months.
I saw my doc, he said maybe a ligamnet is sprained, muscle pulled, or possibly nerve damage( had X-ray taken, everything looked good with the spine and hip). It is slowely getting better, but even slight movements sometimes hit it wrong and I get the pain. Anyone else ever had anything similar?

Sorry, got carried away. Anyway, I am able to do knee raises for the abs without any pain. Maybe give them a try to keep working the abs.

Thanks for replying Barc, I am going through that phase of having little pains and stiffness as I move the wrong way. I am trying to work through it and rest it as much as possible. I will not do deadlifts for a long time and might stop squating for a while, we'll see.

Are you a tall guy? Im 15 and when i was about 12 or 13 i was getting taller VERY fast and i was having really bad back pains. I went to the doctor about it and he said that i was growing so fast that it was causing my back to hurt. I never have any problems with my back anymore though. If you arnt a tall guy i dont know what to tell you though.
