    Deadlift Platform ideas???

Looking for some ideas and/or pictures on making a platform for doing deadlifts.

It's really a pain in the butt to switch plates on a barbell that's resting on the floor, so I'm trying to come up with some ideas for a platform that would allow me to put two vertical supports on it, possibly with each having two or more stop/rest positions, if that makes sense.

Thanks in advance, and keep workin' yer butts off.

Jack stands...holy shit, so obvious that I passed 'em right on by. Just so happens I've got a set of them in a cabinet out in the garage.

Thanks to both of you for the ideas, now I can stop wrestling those damn plates that I'm trying to get to defy the laws of gravity.

    Working out at home, Peetrips.

Unfortunately, my squat rack doesn't have pins, rather bars that go from front to back. Well, that ain't so bad, but the bottom holes aren't quite low enough for doing deadlifts. I'll probably take some time over the holidays, buy a decent drill bit, and punch some additional holes in that thing.

So lemme guess...you have someone else an idea about using jack stands?

Oh yeah, and is that you playing the bass there? Almost looks like it's a Sammick

It's a pretty decent rack....it's a Weider. But they kinda scrimped on the # of holes, which I just don't get...how freakin' much does a hole cost? That's what I thought.

Oh yeah, I got me an Ibanez Jem...love the thing to death. In fact, I've loved it so much that I've almost smashed it against the wall fighting the damn floating tremelo...Damn those can be a bitch. Got 'em figured out now though, it's about as simple as using jack stands for deadlifts, ya see?

Vai kicks ass, yeah buddy! I've seen him with Whitesnake, Roth and several times solo. In fact, back in '93 I was stationed near Munich and saw him there. I forced my way to the front of this auditorium and grabbed a lovely little guitar pick off of his guitar's headstock. Dream Theater played there as well, ever heard them? If not, you need to!

Hell yeah, dream theatre are serious!! My younger bro is quite the guitarist and he has Steve Vai, Dreamtheater, Satriani... (unfortunately? i 'only' play bass, i'd love to be able to play guitar as well)
We dont get many concerts like that in Oz, Vai was here a couple of years ago but i missed it. My brother and his mate went to see him, i got awesome reports.

Peetrips, you 'only' play bass, eh? Well, I've been wailing on the six string for almost 30 years, and struggle like hell when it comes to groovin' out a killer rhythm on a bass, let alone shredding on one. Bass players rock.
Okay, have you listened to Stu Hamm (bass) and Eric Johnson? Hamm does a killer version of the Peanut's "Lucy and Linus". If you're into it, Vai put together two Christmas CDs; Merry Axemas and Merry Axemas II. Each has songs by various guitarists, with no artist playing more than once. Incredible stuff.

Peetrips, there's a good chance if you've ever seen footage of Vai or Satch playing, you've seen Mr. Hamm.

Radio Free Albumeth is probably my favorite CD of his. Look for songs Dr. Gradus ad Parnasum, Moonlight Sonata and I'm sure you'll LOVE 'Country Music, a night in Hell'. Can't go wrong with this CD. It's all instrumental and has songs with Satch and a Mr. Allan Holdsworth (good God!).

The two Vai Christmas CDs are worthy of any collection.

One last thing for now, the seventh song of every Vai CD is written for and dedicated to us axe handlers, so pay attention to those as they are typically quiet emotional and extremely diverse musically.

Now, find some Stu Hamm, or if ya wanna PM me an email address, I could probably find a 'demo' clip of him to send ya.

All right, for anyone that wants to know, this procedure was a HUGE success! Quite an engineering feat, as you’ll soon see, but it does work great.

Okay, now to pay homage to those that assisted in my quest. Scotty suggested using jack stands for my deadlift platform. Peetrips, ripping his t-shirt off and throwing it to the floor pronounced indirectly that he provided that idea to someone recently, wanted some credit for the idea. Firestorm also gave a suggestion of getting a railroad tie. Cinder blocks were also mentioned, but believe me, my wife would have crushed my head between them had I put some down in the gym.

So, the attached picture shows the finished product, and also the memorial plaques showing my gratitude to all parties involved. For those wondering what the hell is hanging on the bar between the stands, well, I didn’t have a railroad tie, so I tried the next best thing…doesn’t seem to help much, though.

Awsome craftsmanship Vai, better be careful, if some equipment manufacture see that, they may want the plans for it.

    Looks like it should do the trick. :thumb;

Pretty sweet, ain't it? Should've seen the wife's first reaction.

I then had her do a couple sets of deadlifts without the stands and had her 'attempt' to change the plates. Didn't work.

Yeah, I'm the man and I got the 'good boy' reward. Counts toward my cardio, doesn't it?
