    Shoulder Pain

I have been working out for almost a year and like the results I am getting. In the last week or so I have started having a lot of pain in my shoulders when I do a bench press. I have tried going lighter on weight, less reps, stretching, taking a few days off and nothing has helped. I would really appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanx

See your doc, that's how mine started in 2004, tried training around it and in 2005 I had rotator cuff surgery. No fun man, take care of it now.

Well i would definitely suggest seeing a doctor. There could be several factors in understanding how the bench press is causing you shoulder pain. It very possibly could be your rotator cuff. Do you do any kind of pre-hab re-hab work on your rotator cuff? INternal or external rotations? Let me know if you don't know what those are.

The bench press does put a certain amount of force on your shoulder joint and rotator cuff

I broke my collar bone years back and have had one hell of a time rehabing it in the gym. Things that have helped me are pre warming cuff w very light weight, don't stretch until fully warm and a medicine ball can be your best friend at home to help strengthen tendons and aid in stretching because of added weight. It sucks and I wish you the best bro. P.s. honestly, gear has been helping repair and recover my shoulder as well IMO. A good herbal bowl helps relax and retard the pain at night safely

i had the same issue, no one had ever shown me how to bench press before. my thought was get under the bar and push. are you keeping you back really tight, though the whole movement? once i started doing this the pain has gone away. good luck!!

I gave up benching for this same reason. Everything I do now is with DB's and I have ZERO pain from it. Give it a shot for a few months and see how it goes.

use joint lube suplements ... warm up before every excersice and stretch AFTER your warm up! lay off the bench for 2 weeks just use dumb bells .. if in 2 weeks it doesnt improve than sorry brother but you gotta go to the doctor n have it looked at.

I'm been lifting 4-5 years. Within a year of starting, I somehow hurt my left shoulder, tweaked it or something, and had to basically lay off the bench for months, although would do it when it felt better. Since then if it starts hurting wrong I lay off bench and shoulder day. But what I've been doing for the past 1-1/2 yrs is almost strictly dumbbell bench exercises, and have seen tremendous strength and shape improvement. That with quality back and shoulders building the pain is never felt anymore. I've seen a chiropractor numerous times, but have never taken pain killers. If you want to continue bench, correctly done dumbbell press is your best bet.

When you bench don't let your elbows go past the center of your ribs...Basically don't go down all the way... When your elbows passes the center it starts using the rotator cuff... If your gym has hammer strength machines use those. I switched gyms just to have those machines.. Same with dumbbells don't pass center rib and keep the dumbbells going straight up and down... If you bring them in so the touch i believe it affects the Anterior part of the shoulder... Hope this helps I'm in the same boat...

do you do upright rows or behind the back shoulder press with heavy weight? This can put alot of pressure on your rotator cuff that can come out while doing bench press.

To further analyze where the injury is you can do a number of self tests. simply extend your injured arm and apply slight pressure laterally both ways and vertically both ways with low resistance. See which gives you discomfort and where. Do a full range of motion sweep and see where it hurts and at what point in the rotation it hurts Also, where is the pain located at exactly. if you could pin point it with one finger where would you point. Before u run off to get an expensive MRI or pay a doctor i would do these simple tests so that you can narrow it down and rule out a more extensive injury. barbell bench press is a "no, no". Dumbbell presses could help alleviate any future injuries to your shoulder. A very common shoulder injury that hurts like a bitch is bicipital tendonitis. The only treatment for this is ice/heat, NSAIDS (motrin, naproxen, toradol) and rest. Research the biceps tendons and see the two points where they attach to the AC joint and i bet this is where you have discomfort. Just a hunch!
