Angry behind the back wrist curls

The other day a friend and I tried behind the back barbell wrist curls as a forearm exercise.
All that happened is a little kind of see saw motion. Were we trying to go too heavy--it didn't feel too heavy though(we were using a 45lb bar with no weights)--or is there a limited range of motion for this exercise?
    -Thanks

Somewhat limited. Do the old school style for wrist strengths by tying a plate to a rope and rolling it on a stick. That stings!!!

why not just do them over the flat end of a preacher bench. arms vertical to the floor(hanging straight down) and curl em up that way. I still prefer forearms over a bench wrist curls.

A for sure don't do them sitting down and resting your wrists on your knees .. busted my left wrist 6 months ago, and it's still holding me back

Consider the Behind the Back WristCurl as a Shrug .. it takes some time to really get to know the exercise ..
But once the technique is there: ouch ...

Guys could you further describe that "plate on a rope" thing please. Sounds like a good one.

I hold the bar in my fingers and not actually my hand.

It makes the ROM a bit bigger.

Basically, you have a 2' round stick with a 36" rope tied at the middle with a weight at the end.
You hold the stick at shoulder level and wined it up and once the weight gets to the stick, you wined it back down.
    Its a real stinger.
    Cool

Hmm usually I do wrist curls with dumbells with my forearms half resting on a bench half hanging over (I would be kneeling down). Is that kind of what you mean?

That's a better way to do them: I hurt mine when one of my wrists slipped from my knee, leaving all the weight on the other one .. ouch.

I do it slowly, on my knees, have been doing this for more than 10 years with no problems. I dont unroll the figers.

Behind the back??? Doesn't sound quite like something I'd like.
