BODYBUILDING SUPPLEMENTS High Quality Supplements For Bodybuilders and Athletes. www.ironmaglabs.com Hehehe, saw the same thread cutemonkey, and since I don't have any proof just my own opinion I'm staying out of that one.
One thing I didn't agree with was when someone stated that a pro's workout is more intense than say mine. Sure they're pushing more weight around but I think I put just as much intensity into my workout as say ronnie colman. |

One and the same!!!! Neither of us got much feedback supporting either side, so I decided to post here and at musclemag to see if anyone had any good info on the subject. I don't know if Mason posts here.
BTW- I must have done something wrong when signing up, because now it says "Junior Member" under my name. Is there any way to fix that??? |

Once your post total gets up to 25 or 30 (can't remember) you become a Member.
Now what I think is as the muscle gets larger it gets more micro tares when working out and therefor requires more time to recover. I'm also thinking thats why smaller muscles like abs and calves can be worked more than once a week, they're smaller and recover faster. Ok, I don't know if my statment is compleat bullshit or correct so don't go jumping all over me about it. |

I also have no proof of this but I agree with Scotty for the same reasons.
I haven't read that post at Hulk's that Scotty referred to but saying a pro works harder than someone else is ridiculous! It's all about heart and how much you want it.I'm no pro but I bet I can put some of the so called pro's workouts to shame against mine. I'm not saying that I'm better than they are, I'm just saying that people like Scotty and myself that have been working out for as long as we have, want it as bad or in some cases more! ------------------ If you build it they will come |

I don't think one can say that just because a muscle gets bigger, then the recovery time is longer. I believe there are more variables to it.. for instance what you eat or take to help repair muscles, how intense you exercise, etc. etc. etc.

J Dubs,as one increases muscle girth one will age as one ages ones ability to recouperate becomes longer. So if you were to look at someone who is natural and trying to attain muscle size it is a grueling process which takes time and we cannot control time.
It would not be logically to ask the question excluding time. Also you can look at the difference between muscles,ie: calf and quad, one has a higher ratio of fast twitch fibres to slow twitch fibres. We all know fast twitch fibres take a longer time to recover when resistance training. When looking at hypertrophy we are training the fast twitch fibres predominantly as they increase in size and number it would make sense that there would be a extended period of time you would need to take to recover??? ------------------ train smart not hard |

Hey Mac,
Just an example: Suppose I have one muscle fiber and it heals at rate, x. Then I get two muscle fibers after resistance training. Couldn't these muscle fibers both recouperate at the same time.. say at the same rate, x? Therefore it would take the same time to recouperate as if I just had one muscle fiber. That is parallel recouperation (if there is such a thing) instead of serial recouperation (repair one muscle fiber then the next..). I'm just trying to make sense of this recouperation reasoning. Help me out would ya! ![]() |

That would not be likely because your body does do not always contract the same muscle fibres when doing a exercise so different fibres would fire a different number of times times.

ok, thanks mac..
I figure it this way: More muscle --> more things restore after exercise --> body needs more fuel to heal --> certain amount of fuel can be generated in the body in a certain amount of time --> more time to recouperate. |

Hmmm.....then again as a person gets more muscle, the bodys need for nutrients increase,if we did not fuel ourselves efficiently then we would take longer to recover or we would simply not grow.
If we did fuel ourselves properly then the recovery time would be identical to when we had less muscle mass and we fueled ourselves properly? Does that make sense? A thought.................. ------------------ train smart not hard |

I'm in a friendly argument over whether or not your muscles need more rest as they get bigger (talking about size purely)- not taking into account increased intensity or anything like that. Any info would be helpful, especially studies on this subject matter.

Yep mac, exactly what I was thinking. By changing other variables such as diet, we can possibly maintain our recovery time even with larger muscles. However there are probably a lot more relevant factors involved. Even the weather could have an effect on recovery. It's just a theory though.
