Question What are power cleans for?

I have heard of powercleans a lot and i have even tried them once or twice but what are they for? Is it for a specific muscle or cardio or what? I was wondering because next semester i will prolly have to do them in football and i just wanted to know! Thanks in advance guys.

Its an explosive power movement, not really for Body building but great for something like football.

i love power cleans or clean and presses. Really great for trap and calf development actually.

With what body part would they be done? What's the primary target?

Well if you doing power cleans, you'd be working your (some more than others):

    calves
    hams
    quads
    glutes
    spinal erectors
    traps
    bi's
    forearms
    abs

As stated before, power cleans are not exactly a bb'ing movement. Its used more for sports because it helps you to be more explosive. It also takes a long time to learn how to do this movement properly.

I think they're more for the back and shoulders (if your doing press). I do them as a warm up, sometimes before back, sometimes before legs.
    I do'em now and then just cause I like'em.
    Cool

Like every exercise, if done incorrectly they can hurt your joints bones or whatever. Power clean is an exercise that takes time to learn the right form like Yanick mentioned. I seen more people do this movement incorrectly than what I have seen do it right. So that may be why you may have heard of people messing up themselves doing this.

Since I'm not Olympic trained I guess I can't argue that, but they do bother me, for sure, and yes I have read of Olympic athletes with many hip joint problems early in life.

    power cleans

id never even heard of a "power clean" 5 months ago when our defensive coordinator told us clueless freshman we had to do max out on them righ away. so that was not cool. but what i didn't know then is that you can put up a lot more if you jerk sort of(bear in mind, id never done this lift in my life the first time i maxed). if you get some momentum going up and then drop your hips down suddenly and use that momentum to flip over the bar(hard to exlpain) thne you can lift it with your legs. is that considered improper and not conting? i know thats not the right form. but can you get away with it at least a little during a max?
and do you ahve to kinda military press it over your head? thats what we had to do.

That would be a clean and press I believe, not just a clean, although maybe power clean connotates the same thing (?)

Every once in awhile just walking up stairs will bother my knees, so this is just not a movement I'm fond of.

    knees

when i walk up the stairs, my ankles make all kinds of popping sound, but they never hurt me. my knees are what hurts me. i went to a doctor and he didn't look at them too closely but he said it might be that where my tendon from my quads reaches my bones, that part is swelling up from too much athletic activity, and that it happens to people in their early teens. I have these bumps right under my kneecap, and if if bump them they kill. also though i have problems if i stand for more than 30 minutes or so they start to hurt.

That still stuff bugs the crap out of me, because like anything else it means that your in a wear and tear situation, and you can't replace your ankles as easily or cheaply as main bearings in your car, or etc

So when such a situation arises it gives me a paing of guilt and wondering whats going on, and find a way to make it stop, wether your foot angle (pigeon toe, whatever), or...?

I was watching some guy do them and he was a house! He was strong as f*ck but looked like crap! But again, he's for strength so it doesn't matter for him!

Definately alot of fun, but even when I weighed less it was kind of hard on the body, doh.

Still though, think about whats happening, constant friction, it may not bother you now, but if its going to keep up like that, thats no good.
