I found that doing more compound movements increased my sprint speed for rugby

If by speed training, you mean sprint speed, you could just use a hill. Sprint speed is determined by stride frequency x stride length. Uphill running improves stride frequency and downhill running improves stride length.

Most speed & agility adaptations occur with doing drills on a field. You really don't need anything more then an open field and some cones or even rocks for place indicators in this economy. Ankle weights are okay, but your ability to run fast are determined by power generated from hips flexion/extension and less about leg strength, otherwise, pro bodybuilders would be the world's fastest sprinters and they're not. You certainly want leg strength & muscle, but they're not the primary engine in determining speed.

I wouldn't even suggest ankle weights. Get a weight vest so that you're more balanced. If you try to sprint with ankle weights on, your legs are going to be flailing.

A squat rack and weights. Good shoes. A place to run. That's all you need.

If you want to go further you could use more weights, a hill, a parachute, mini hurdles....but you don't needs that stuff. I've trained many state champs without them.

Speed training is more about form, and building leg power, which can be done by running and lifting. Adding ankle weights and vests will likely just screw up your form. Don't worry about any of that crap until you your form is good.
