Lifting, how often and what groups?

    Hello

42, flabby, JUST starting out, not looking to bulk, looking to go lean and defination (diet and cardio!)

Just wondering if some more exp gents can offer some suggestions as to how many times should I lift a week and how to break up the different muscle groups...2 days a week? 3? 4?

I'm going cardio 5 days a week, shooting for 30 min or so. My diet is simple....staying away from sugars (breads, pasta, sugary treats) eating veggies, fruit and leaner proteins and drinking lots of water.

Thanks for ANY advice, much appreciated.

One last thing....since I'm not trying to bulk up, should I stay away from protein shakes and the like?

For the protein shakes - no, it won't make you gain weight if it fits your macros. Take it. As for the lifting - it depends on your personal recovery time. If recover good, you can hit each bodypart 2-3 times per week if you want. You can just do the normal chest/tris back/bis and legs/shoulders split if you want to keep it simple.

when i cut, i stay on my same routine. IMO, routine doesnt really matter (during a bulk, cut, or recomp). For me, its change of my diet and increase in cardio (jump roping/swimming). I cycle through 3 workout routines a year and switch from one to the other about every 6 weeks.
