My guess is that the doctor was concerned about him injuring himself at an early age.

A friend recently said his doctor told him that he was too young to lift weights. is this true?

Parents often came into my gym in Pasadena with their sons or daughters and asked me to devise a weight training program. Their motives varied: they wanted their children to gain weight, have better posture, get stronger, gain self-assurance, or be able to defend themselves.
Children should be mentally mature enough to know why they are training. Concentration is important, as is the reason for training -- it has to be more than the parent's desire.
Children should be physically mature, beyond puberty. I instinctively felt that a child would not benefit from training prior to physical maturity.
The contention that weight training is dangerous for children is still, I believe, a valid one. Prepubescents should never engage in Olympic lifting or power lifting (these are competitive sports) and should always have qualified supervision for any kind of weight training. Many injuries have occurred when children are down in the basement, trying to outlift one another and going beyond their ability.

Yeah I started around 11!!! off and on..then got into it heavy for football around 15...I'm 6'1, now, could I have grown to be 6'4??? who knows, but I don't think so.


I also started at 11, I'm 6'2". Keep the weights real (dont overdo it playing with your ego) and you should be injury free. I'm taller than my dad so I dont think I was going anywhere that I didn't end up.

ok, first things first...you gotta be determined/dedicated...that's the key...
ok, so now that you're determined......
go to the diet & nutrition Forum and post your stats and current diet....meal# 1, meal #2..etc...try to be as accurate as you can...
post your goals too..
Then go to the Training thread and post your current workout schedule and routine...if you have pics that would also help....
after that, people on the board will chime in with tons of advice...and there are also tons of threads on here dealing with the exact subject you're interested in, so in addition to asking us, you can search through posts that are already up for someone in your exact position...good luck, I'll be advising you soon!![]()

I won't state an age but I'll say this much. Is there an age that is too young to lift? The answer is yes. Reason is because the body is still growing which entails your joints and ligaments. They say that weightlifting at too early an age can cause damage to those joints and growing ligaments. Ditto, it's always best to ask a professional...not a teenager...Well, unless that teenager is Doogie Howser!!

The only thing I'd add to this is to talk to a sports doctor, a regular doctor will tell you not to regardless where as a sporst doctor will tell you what to and what not to do.Originally posted by firestorm

I find it utterly rediculous that people still rely on a family practice doctor for their diet and fitness advice.
There are some doctors that are educated in nutrition and even bodybuilding, but there are very few.
Just because you have a degree in medicine (MD) does not qualify you as a nutritionist or expert in weight training by any measure.
In means that you are an expert in MEDICINE. So if you have a question that relates to medicine, ask your doctor, if you need advice in weight training or diet, go to the experts in those fields.

Actually Scotty and Prince your points here DO INDEED have to do with the original question. And you are both correct. He should ask a sports doctor and hopefully his parents insurance will cover it. Good points bros.

OR..if he goes to see his medical physician/pediatrition, whatever....hopefully, he can be referred to a more qualified person...that's what happened to me back in the day quite often..."ouch, my ankle hurts"..."ok, well I'm referring you to so and so..he's a BONE DOCTOR"![]()
Good point Free,, if he or his parents are on one of those HMO's etc, He may have to see his family Phy. In turn he could request a referral. I don't think it should be that difficult expecially if all he wants to do is ask a question. He may even try just calling one out of the yellow pages and maybe they will just answer the question for him over the phone.
ok ok. i got my meal set-up now. i need some stomack flattening exercises(both for the gym and at home) please detail best as possible. also diff. exercises to get a better v-taper, a bigger chest, shoulders back, tri's and bi's sorry if it seems like alot but i have been out of shape for a while and am lookin to get as cut as possible for someone as myself (+ it doesnt really help to be in this condition as a teen when your supposed to be flirting and watnot lol). thank you all and p.s. i got my gym membershipat the ymca. thanx again,

naw my abs are strong but not defined. that was also extremely quick.

if they're stong, but not defined, you need to do exercises with high reps to get them grooves going..
but still, the most important thing is diet...stick to a good diet for a period of time, do the exercises, and you'll see results...
right but i need to know which exact exercises (bicycles...etc.)

any excercise that raises the heart rate for at least 30 mins a session. Fast walking, Jump rope, bike, tread mill, any of them.
how about sparring w/ a 80 lb. heavy bag bare knuckeled for 35 min.?

your situation is really weird cus last year (i was 14) i was 6'3 268, and my abs werent remotley close to being cut. Now i am 6'5 220 and i still dont have really cut abs (yet). To me it seems that you need to lose a ton of weight before you get close to having cut abs.
Being a martial artist for over 30 years, I suggest Bag gloves. their lightweight. No reason to go bare knuckeled on a heavy bag. In regards to the excercise,, absolutely that is a great workout.
