oh jeez, let's not start this pec debate again!

I currently use two exercises for my pecs: decline presses, and a pec dec machine, that's it.

Oh com'mon Prince! Humor the greenhorns! Be the mentor!Upper, lower, left right, top bottom....the dude wants a big chest, man!
Big D., My personal approach for increasing 'lower' pecs involves the reduction of the abs, or in my case, AB, (also known as Guttius Maximus) directly beneath the pecs.

--I might not distribute it, but I know how to talk it.

Most of the shape of your pec is genetically determined, however its been said that declines do hit the lower portion a little more than say inclines.
Whatever you do is going to work the whole pec muscle.

    Not this debate again

I think variety is the key. Every time I do chest I do some flat bench work, some decline work and some incline work. Just mix it up and you will see results all around.

Well listen, gentlemen, there is a machine @ my gym (it is a 'Hammer' I believe..big ol' yellow critter) that simulates relatively the same range of motion that decline presses would. Have any of you seen or used this machine? Effectiveness?

By the way, if one's musculature is based on genetics (or in my case, Generics) its a good thing my son is adopted!

I use hammer strength machines every once in a while. I tend to favor free weight excersises though. I feel like they like they help increase my mass better than the machines do.

Well, since I work out alone this machine allows me to push it when I might otherwise not be able to.

If you work out alone just use the free weights but don't do any forced reps. Once you feel like you hit failure or can't go any further just stop.
Do you work out in a gym and you just don't want to ask anyone for a spot?

Yeah, I work alone. And unfortunately, I have a hard time 'just stopping'. Most of the 'bigger' guys in this gym either work with partners. (and the smaller fellahs I wouldn't trust to save my throat, face, whatever.) Not that I'm lifting that much at all, usually 75-80 per hand on flat bench DB presses. (only been back in the gym for a month or so, after a year+ layoff) For the same reason, I haven't done standard BB Bench Presses in many years.

Most people are pretty cool about helping out with spots, even if the are with a partner already. Just ask, if they say no at least you know. And don't be so quik to dissmiss the littler guys, you'd be suprised at the strenght some of them have.

I wouldn't worry about using the "machines" DayMayor, just try to use them in combination with free weights and you shouldn't have any problem.

Oh, yeah..no doubt. I use free weights as much as possible. (In fact, the Gym is called The Free Weight Gym.) I was just curious about this particular machine because it seemed to be a convenient alternative.
Nor was I knockin' smaller guys...the ones I was referring to are in their teens, and are usually too busy admiring themselves in the mirror to even work out. (And don't you fret none, you'll be a big guy too one day, P-funk.)

Agreed. That's why I look like a damn stump. I should be 6'-3".

You used two exclamation marks (!!) on your "dumb ass" ending remark, as opposed to my "dumb ass" period (.) Hmmmm.......... You takin' ephedra, my friend?

**Please note that the 'dumb ass' comment in my previous post was inspired/stemmed from a comment you made to TP earlier today about me figuring out that you were a dumb ass....you dumb ass. Now, if the term 'dumb ass' offends you, please accept my most sincere appologies, and note that in the future, I will make a concerted effort to use the phrase "goofy gluttius" in place of "dumb ass"

I'll put it to you this way, I am a midget with big shoulders.

No actually it is kind of deppressing story for me.

for starters I am only 5'5" I always lifted weighs and excersised since my high school years. But in high school I also partied pretty hard. A couple of years back I gave up partying to pursue my interest in bodybuilding. I got up to 185lbs at about 12-13% bf. (Not to bad on a 5'5" frame). The only problem was that I ended up snapping back to my former self. I took a year off (I still ran 5miles a day because I never liked being sedentary) to be an alcoholic and take part in lots of recreational drug use.

I started lifting again last march '02. and around Aug. I got back into serious lifting and will never go through the partying phase again. I am officially done

So after that year I lost 30lbs do to all the alcohol, drugs, running and poor diet. I am now 154lbs. I am real cut though and I am currently cutting becuase I am going to cancun at the end of March. So I have about 6 weeks of cut left. Thank God.

When I get back I will continue in my quest of gaining lean muslcle mass and because of muscle memory I hope to really put on a lot of weight. My lifts are still going up even though I am eating low carbs and in a caloric defecit. So I think I will be able to get big pretty fast.

    So you're a pit bull...cool. (I'm a fat lab. heh heh)
Hey, everybody makes poor choices every now and then. Myself included. (DaMayor, once upon a time, was the King of deliberate poor choices.) But, there's always a price to pay. I'm paying it now myself.
Good thing is, I haven't ever forgotten the motivators...the good coaches, the mentors, and the team mates I've had over the years, and most importantly, how good it feels to be in peak condition. So, I'm with you, bro...I ain't going back either.
Life's too short, and I don't want my little boy to be able to wear daddy out when he's ten.

I've been reading Arnie's bodybuilding encyclopedia. It seems he's a firm believer in the idea of working different parts of each muscle.
Shouldn't inclines help the upper pecs though? There are two separate parts of the muscle, afterall.

Oopsy daisy! Revenant just open the flood gates on that one! j/k
I'll start shall I. But the pecs contract as one muscle so bench should be all you need on the other hand incline flys hit the upper pecs nicely.
I waiting for the water j/k
The harder you try the tougher you will be!
