My first gym injury and Im in a lot of pain.

I will admit I was dumb and was not wearing a wrist band to keep my wrists from moving, all I had was my gloves. I was doing my chest with dumbbells today. I was doing 90lbs in each hand, and well by the time I was finished, I was in some very extreme pain. I can tolerate pain, because I am roofer, and I deal with pain in my lower back, and cuts etc, but right now I have shooting pain from my wrists all the way to my shoulders. What can I do to help ease the pain? I am going to give absorbean jr a try since it works wonders on my feet when I have been on a steep roof all day. Is this common? I guess it would be, but this has never happened to me before. Any help would be great. I do take joint pills.

I roof too. I seem to get alot of shoulder pain if I do alot of tearoffs. I just try and keep my form very strict and dont over work my shoulders if I've had a busy week. Alternating hot and cold on the area seems to help too.

We do tearoff only as well. My shoulders were always cut, I don't know what I did, but I am hoping I can get it taken care off. I have off tomorrow because of the rain, but I have to work Thursday, and Friday.

Not sure how to explain it. But I find if I grab the wood part of the roofing shovel instead of the actual plastic handle. It allows the handle to slid thru my hand and take some of the shock off my shoulder.

Flat bench or incline? Which way is the pain going. What kind of pain. Sharp knife, piercing? Electric zap? Numbing? And where/what area of your shoulder(s) and wrist? Front, back side, ect.

You might not want to compress but wrap your wrist if thats where the pain is originating from. But always ice after an injury.

I was thinking it could be within the brachial plexus. It could be the wrist but I need more information to make any kind of assumption.

Just ice the part that hurts the most right now, bud.

It was shooting pain and partial numbness. It started at my wrists and shot up through my shoulder blade. I mopped my wrists down absobean jr and the pain seems to have eased up. I knew something wasn't right when, when I went to do my abs and when I did my side raises my hands were going numb and I was in a lot of pain while hold a 45 lb weight. I started out on the incline 4 sets of 8, then it really started acting up when I went to flat dumbbell press. By the time I made it to flat dumbbell flys I made it 3 of my 4 sets and te pain became too much. I am about to go ice my wrists down. Thanks for the help guys.

This morning it feels more like a ache in my bones. Does that still mean a possible pinched nerve?

The hardest thing for me to do when injured is just take time off and heal. I always push it and it leads to a worse injury, or another one altogether.

I would take time off the weights, as hard as it is, and let your wrists heal.

sounds like they are doing better though.

Deja Vu has the fix. you want to alternate Hot and Cold - no longer than 10 minutes of each, Hot causes the blood to rush into the damaged area, Cold causes the blood to disperse from the injured area, doing this over and over you are constantly circulating the injured area, no more than 10 minutes each! Get some Tiger Balm Ultra - Martial Artists have been doing this for centuries - myself being a Martial Artist in one of the most brutal styles have broken every finger, including thumbs, wrists, arms, shins, ribs and feet at one time or another over the years and I can tell you this method works.

Sounds like a pinched nerve or tennis elbow. When I have pain shooting through my whole arm it was definitely tennis elbow but it ended right before the wrists. This is because your whole arm is connected by major nerves. I would definitely take time off and not put pressure on it.

    ^^fo snizzle

I like to do 15mins on and off but w/o the hot compress. Just the cold on 15 then cold off 15. Either way this is what you need to be doing all day. Good call GreenOx.

There is no way to diagnosis whats going on through a forum. Get your ass to a doc. Im sure you have one for your back.

Stay off it for a couple/few days. Just to see how it heals and not to exacerbate the injury. But keep the ice on. And that doesnt mean you still cant WO. You can do lower body, abs, ect.

    Good luck, bud.

I had to do some work stuff today, which involved me lifting 30 80lb bundles into the back of our big truck, and it was taking everything in me, to battle through it. The only thing that will involve my arms as far as working out goes for the rest of the week, is when I do my shoulders. I may just do abs and cardio on friday. Today is legs so I will be ok there. I will alternate hot and cold this evening. I am in the gym 7 days a week even if its just cardio, it maybe my body telling me I am over doing it, with roofing and lifting like I do.

It could be. Maybe you havent been getting enough minerals and Vit D and your bones have become brittle. Wrap it up while youre working.

I take a animal pak every day, so I dunno. I hate taking that many pills, but it has a lot of good stuff in it.

Since youre a roofer youre getting your Vit D from the sun so thats good. IMO you dont need Animal Pak if you eat right. Fuck those pills and the gallon of fluid that goes with taking them.

ATM lets stay on topic and focus on getting your butt to a doc. And dont forget to RICE and what GreenOx said.

    You got this

Oh, btw, how often do you use straps? Straps are good only when youre going beyond the bodys limits. If you use them all the time for semi-light weight. IMO lose the straps. Too many people wrap everything. If you do that all the time, such as a back brace, youre in fact keeping your center core weak because your body is relying on the brace and not the deep internal stabilizing muscles for support.

How long have you been doing the 24/7 gym routine? And if its been more than 6-8 weeks w/o at least a 3,4 or 7 day break...maybe is time. Plus youre a roofer and I would imagine that shit is already a heavy load on the body.

I don't have straps, I have some gloves, because at times my hands are raw dealing with gritty shingles, and I need some protection. I have been going no stop gym and work for 8 months straight now, 2 of the 5 days are rest days but still include cardio or doing my abs. I need a back brace too, because I am starting to get to the point of really heavy lifting now. I have all of that coming for Christmas. Next week is going to be a hell week at work, so I will more then likely just take 3-4 days off next week and recover.

Thank you sir. Today is my back so I wont need a spotter, but next week I am going to start working out with a friend, since my current partner doesn't take it serious, and is a big baby.

Let me know how they work out. My elbow kills me some days. Thought about wrapping them for my last few heavy sets.

Your wrists shouldn't really react like this to 90lb dumbbells for presses. You should rest for a week and see if the pain subsides. If not, visit a doctor who will refer you to a specialist to see what happened.

Take off a full week from any lifting. The extra few days you sacrifice might help you eliminate a complication or injury that can halt your progress for weeks, even months. Trust me, I've been there and wish I had listened to my body more.
