    Exclamation Shoulder Seperation

A few months ago I separated my shoulder playing football, our team does a stupid drill where we run into each other and lower our shoulder as hard as possible into each other. I felt my shoulder hurt like hell but I kept playing football and doing this drill every week for the rest of the season. I went to my doctor and he said I separated my shoulder but I can still workout. Now my shoulder's been a little sore on and off and I've been doing workouts for every part of the body. I am going to physio but it doesn't seem to help, but sometimes when I stretch my arms above my head my shoulder all of a sudden will hurt an insane amount for about 30-45 minutes then go back to being sore. So should I take a few weeks off from working out and let it rest? If you've had a separated shoulder please give me your advice on how to rehabilitate it so I can continue working out and playing football.

Well i have had rotator cuff surgery on my left, and dislocated my right 5 times now. I would give it some time off and see a specialist. Your doctor should not have told you to work out without knowing the extent of your damage, and honestly the best thing if your pain is persistent is and MRI. For now ice, rest, and get to a better doctor

Get it checked and shut it down for a bit. If you don't, you may do long-term damage. Not worth it.

Definately see a doctor and take the appropriate action. You don't want to end up unable to lift your arm over your head when you're older.

Normally the doc will tell you the degree of separation that you've sustained. There are 3 degrees. To keep this in layman's terms, a shoulder separation involves 2 main tendons in your shoulder. 1st degree is a strain of the 1 tendon, 2nd degree is a tear of one and a strain of the other, 3rd degree is both torn.

If you have a 1st degree, the best you can do is rest. If it's anything past that, surgery might be the only option for full recovery. But I'm just some nobody on the internet, go to a doctor.

I tore my rotator cuff many years ago - ice and rest are best - if the pain doesn't let up - a doctor is mandatory. I had to have PT for several months after - now when it begins to act up, I start the PT exercises again and let it rest.
