HIIT with very high heart rate?

This is a question for my girlfriend. She & I wondered if she is able to carry this out as her heart rate reaches quite dangerous levels around 190 bpm for a 19 year old, she also has asthma. I suggested this sort of training for her as to my knowledge is the best however do you think its safe for her to continue? And gradually she might become more used to it? She has been carrying it out for around 2 months now. If not, could you suggest a different training method?

Only 190 for a 19-year old? 200 is an 'average' maximum for a 20-year old, sounds like she's slacking. Seriously. Check out max heart rates for stress tests by age and sex, there are charts all over the web.

Here's one site that came up first on a Google search: Maximum Heart Rate

I'm 45, and I used to max out in the low 170's, like 172-3. Now I max out in the low 180's, hit 185 last week on a stationary bike on a 10 minute balls to the wall leg session.

190 bpm is not something I would consider dangerous.

I think it must have to do with her asthma as around that level she can't breathe that she thinks something must be wrong. I think she was just wondering whether it is to do with the actual training itself or the asthma

That's what HIIT is all about, though. If you have ANY spare breath, you didn't push hard enough. Maximum effort is really, really hard to do. Keep doing it and your max heart rate will increase a bit, too.

Yeah, when I would do tabata intervals, I would easily see my heart rate pegging 190+ and I was 38 yrs old at the time. I just shut the damn alarm off on my HRM and would keep going. She may be concerned with the asthma, but just go based on feeling.

Heart rates that high are not dangerous unless you have some kind of existing condition that creates a contraindication. Sounds like she's working hard. Tell her to keep up the good work.
