Is it better to increase weights gradually - or "shock" muscles with heavy weight partial reps ( to failure)?

Yes, 39 and more reps if I can handle usually 8-10. And total weight exceeds 16,000 lbs. per workout (lifted).

I was set up on 12 machines initially (Sept.2002) but I added the oblique and ab + ad-duction (inner and outer thighs)....only takes me 45 min. - 1 hour a day/workout.....

i do split training. unless youre really incompetent, a lil old lady or a preteen, i dont see any reason to circuit. i do 16 sets per body part, 4 sets per exercise, 1 movement type per body part. (example: biceps: dhammer curls, dtwisting curls, dpalm-up curls, preacher(inner/outer weekly split) standing bar (inner/outer weekly split).
the Y just starts you off like that cause they have to assume that you are A:just starting, B:a complete moron.
develope your own routine based on research, goals and personal preference

Well I'm NOT a moron and I just started at the Y to get in shape. THEY suggested circuit, and YES I am NEW & just starting out

    - SO I NEED TO LEARN...I have no clue on training with free weights except curls for biceps and bench press....Most men shun at the fact a chick would be in THEIR weight room anyway- they get all huffy, show off more....

Yes, I look forward to my workouts - just get discouraged lately cuz I'm getting sooo many opinions on diet and routines telling me I am wrong or a "MORON" like the dumbass up there (replied).

No I already know that, I always push myself to the max I can handle, but I did not know to increase steadily. I was working out regular with no increases for about 3 mos! No one told me when to increase so I started on my own.

I know I look a heck of a lot better than when I started, but I really needed insight into nutrition and training to make SURE I am tweaking both to the finest points. That's why I hang out in these darn forums... to learn

My next step is to find out prper from and use free weights, even if I do it at home. I have dumbbells and a verticle leg press with 150 lbs. but I am pushing 200 on the sitting legpress at the Y.

whoa. you took my first reply totally out of context. i wasnt saying the YOU are a moron... just that the Y trainers HAVE TO ASSUME THAT EVERYONE IS (they did for me when i first started going there). and second i assumed that you were interested in serious body building, you didnt specify what your goals are... most BODYBUILDERS use split days. if thats not what you what to do then a circuit is fine.

    Well that's how it sounded - re-read it....anyway NP .

I AM new to BB (read profile) that is why I am asking these questions. The Y did set me up on circuit for 6 weeks then moved me into the weight room where they have several plated machines (universals) that I use on current circuit training.

I want to know how to get started on free weights (training) .

I really like the circuit/weighted plate machines, but I'm sure I'll like the free-weights too.

I agree, you get what you put in. And, actually you read my mind...I am breaking for 5 days a/o today

Will think about a plan for working a split (try) upper an lower on given days, I have a log online I keep.

    Thanx!
