not sure how much evidence there is to support it, but it's said that doing heavy compound exercises like squats can stimulate GH release.

Yes, it would depend on the exercise, squats deads are probably the two biggies here.
I believe your coach was correct.

they are exercises that incorporate more than one muscle group, such as a squat which utilizes quads, glutes, hamstrings & lower back.

the opposite would be an isolation exercise which works only one muscle group, such as leg extensions which only hits the quads.

I never looked into it deeply, but i have heard that its because of the 'spill-over' (of GH, IGF-1 etc) to other muscle groups.

Compound exercises are the bench press, deadlift, and squat. Those are the 3 main ones. And I have heard that squats release a certain testosterone called Serum Testosterone. Here is a good article on squats.

Supposedly the big thing is, you are working out so many muscles at the same time, and squats are such an intense excersize, that it does trigger GH release. Personally I believe it, as for the total technical yada yada of what happens who knows, but to me it plain makes sense.

If you sit on your ass your whole life your body has no motivation to grow muscle, if you work your ass off, the harder you kick your ass the more you will grow. To fool your body into doing this growing "for you" then you have to do something other than just bench presses.

easiest way (i think) the determine what is a compound exercise is by joint involvement. is there more than 1 joint involved? then it's compound. like leg extensions - that involves 1 joint - the knee. so it's not a compound exercise. squats involve hip and knee joints so it is.
