    Side lateral raises

Do you lower the weight to your sides or in front of you?

It's a lot harder to lower them to your sides and start from the weight touching your legs. It seems when you start in front of yourself you get a bit of help from other muscles.

What's better, I have been trying both.

i recently have changed and started from the side and raise my arms fully extended to 90 degrees. i have dropped a lot in weight due to the change but feel it much more. was probably cheating too much doing them in the front.

If your lateral head is stubborn try TUT, I dropped the weight and did slow reps for maybe a min-min 15 and that helped start my shoulders growing some long time ago. Previously my shoulders bothered me often and they were always held back.

    I switch between the two.

One variation I use is raising to the sides, but I bring my arms down only halfway (to about 45 degrees). This does not give your delts any time to relax during the set. It's a nice variation, but use a lighter weight.

I used to find that I cheated (used too much front deltoid) when I brought them to the front...decided to switch to the side...dropped my weight but the exercise feels much better and my results have improved. I feel you can maintain more tension on the muscle by starting from the sides and you're also less likely to turn the thumbs up thus cheating by placing too much emphasis on the fron delts.

side and I actually hold my elbows @ a 90-100degree angle as well, do 'em isolaterally and keep my body rigid to avoid the throwing wt issue.

Prince...I agree but for many people...taking the weight to the side just makes it harder to cheat.

I did it at the side for a looooooong time, and went to the front maybe 3 months ago. I dont use a ton of weight, and I dont use much swinging at all to get the weight moving, so I agree that it can be done without "cheating." I do somewhat slow reps so there isn't much swinging of any kind at all.
