Unhappy Serious question, I need help with a back problem...

It's been bothering me for about 3 months now. I've wanted to go to a doctor but I have no insurance, so I've hesitated and thought it would go away. Let me explain my training. I started out at about 165 pds. I've used protein and I've eaten a lot of food to put on weight. I'm now at 205. All this in a little less than 8 months of training. Maybe I've over done it and wanted it too fast. I'll say this, I did not notice the back problem until I was in the gym one day about 3 months ago. I was benching, and I noticed the pain in my back and I wondered what the heck it could be and why I hadn't noticed it before. I kept lifting that day and it started to aggravate me more. So I went home and put ice on it and took the next week off. Well it improved enough that week where I could lift. It still hurt when I would lift the weight off of the rack on the bench press. On some exercises it didn't hurt at all. It didn't really bother me while squating. The bench press would only hurt on the lift off. Military press was the worst. I completely quit that. When I'm in the weight room now it's not too bad. But it really aggravates me when I sit for a prolonged period of time. There is a pinching like pain that starts not quite 3/4ths the way down my back in the middle seems to be around the edges of my spine maybe an inch or 2 long area. There is also a pain on the left side of my back just above my left butt cheek that starts up after I stand for a long period or sit for a long period with weight on it. The pain was covering a larger area a while back but it wasn't bothering me it seemed as it is now. So, I'm really debating hard if I should lay out of the gym for a month maybe 2 and see how it goes. I really hate to do it, I really do, but I want the pain to go away. I really want to see a doctor, but I don't have the insurance and my dad doesn't want to pay out of pocket. I'm going to continue to try to talk him into it. This back pain along with depression from memories of an ex-girlfriend haunting me really hard has really been tearing me up. I'd appreciate a few prayers and some advice from you guys. Thanks for listening!

do you push your stomach out in front of you when you bench? a lot of people do it to get leverage on a last rep or max out. maybe you pinched a nerve doing this, but i dont know much about backs.

I would say definetly take some time off from lifting.....You probably should go to see the doctor as well....What is your form like when you do the millitary press? Do you arch you back out a bit or do you keep your back against the bench with your abs drawn in tight to stabalize yourself. Look at the form on all of your exercises? Where is your back going? How is your posture during the exercise, are you stabalizing yourself properly??

Definetly take some time off and use caution?

If you have no health insurance then try and find a free clinic. They are usually around in most major cities if you go looking for them. I have a freind that has not had health insurance for about 5 years. He relies soley on free clinics.

I am no doctor nor chiropractor, but it sounds like it's more than just a muscle strain that will go away with rest. It sounds more like a pinched nerve, hernated disk, etc.

Again, I am not trying to diagnose this, but if I were you I would go see a chiropractor. For a consultation including X-rays you're talking about $150 or so. I think your health is worth that, don't you? I certainly hope that your dad thinks you're worth $150.

During the military press my back gets an arch in it. As for the bench press I don't bridge, but there is a natural arch in the back when you lay on the bench press. One more thing. A week or 2 back I couldn't do leg raises when I was lying in bed without feeling that pain in my back. Well whatever pain that was, it's gone now because I can do leg raises and not feel it at all.

Dude, seriously, go to the doctor....no matter what it costs, you are messed up right now. If you couldn;t raise your legs while lying in bed, even if the problem has ceased, that is a serious issue. You need to get yourself checked out by a professional.

Side note: To get rid of the natural arch, draw you abs in....this will help you stabalize your core more efficiently when performing the exercise.

I agree with Prince, see a Chiropractor. Mine rarely x-rays, he can usually tell by a exam and discription of the pain. Office visits run around 30 bucks.
I have back problems, if you are out of adjustment, rest all you want, the pain will go away until you start to lift again. Sounds to me like you have something out of wack and it is pinching a nerve. If it gets worse it will go into a spasm and then your done.
Here's some advice if you are unable to see a Doc, use a heating pad, followed by stretching, then ice. Do this every morning and you may just get lucky, stop doing what ever hurts until you get this taken care of. Last of all, see a Chriropractor first, not a reg. Doc. A Chropractor is the best start, they will tell you if it's something they can't fix and they can do it with out costly drugs. Good Luck!
