    Unhappy Pitcher's arm???

My 13 yr old is a baseball pitcher, last yr. he pulled something in the tricep area, took him to the doc, pulled muscle(?), just started again this yr.............and already he has pain from his armpit to his elbow, any ideas on what it could be and what I can do for him, no swelling or bruising or anything of that nature, just pain during that pitching motion and when he stretches out..........thanks in advance...............

That was last spring, and he had no problems with it during football and basketball this fall and winter.........if it is just the muscle, I can't imagine it being anything else, but I don't know what to do for it........maybe I'll do a search.thanks

Well, first of all we're not sport's medicine doctors, secondly giving a diagnosis over the net not only difficult, but could have legal implications.

I would assume that it healed betwen last year and this year, right? So, it sounds like he is is not warming up his shoulder and arm adequately, and he may need to work on strength and conditioning.

    maybe this will help:

I know Prince, but alot of the members here do seem to be quite knowledgeable in the area of muscle developement, etc. I'm certainly by no means a stupid person, nor an ignorant mother, obviously my question was only in asking curiously if someone's own child might have experienced this, I'm very capable of picking up the phone and calling my doctor or doing a medical search.........If I'm comfortable enough here in this forum to ask a question about my child, then that would mean I trust the judgement and education of some of the members. here..............And thanks for the site..............I do appreciate any information I am given here

Muscle development is not the same as injuries though. 9 times out of ten if someone asks about an injury here the first thing you will hear is go see a doctor (depending on the seriousness of course).

Even if you called a doctor on the phone and told him/her your symptoms they would say come in for an examination, right? (at least I hope they would)

Actually I know my doctor so well that all I have to do is call, I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist, so I can explain in complete detail what is wrong, unless of course it something real serious, I thought maybe he might be growing again too, my boys seem to ache more than my daughter when it comes to growing, he has also been working out with me, light w8 and using training cords, but I do agree that he probably isn't warming up enough.....thanks again, I appreciate it....................

When I was 12 - 13, I was taught how to throw a curve ball and slider by my provincial team coach. After much practice, I had a nasty curve ball that backed 16 year olds out of the batters box!!!! (Enough bragging....) The moral of my story is that by the time I was 18 (an infielder and hadn't pitched for years), I suffered from severe shoulder and elbow pain. I basically got to the point that I was unable to play more that one game a week.

If your son has learned to throw the junk, convice him to wait at least a couple more years until he is able to develop more.

Sorry this is off topic, it's just something that I tell any young pitchers when I get a chance.

That's exactly what hurts on him, he says his elbow is what hurts the most, but only when he does that throwing movement, I'll watch him and see how he does it, I'm going to have him do some very light w8 lifting, rows, etc, he says it hurts to even do a push up, I may get it x-rayed too, I already set up the appt. just in case...thanks

    Katie,

Are you sure it is a muscle?? When I was 14, I had some pain in my arm. It was related to the ulnar nerve which runs on the inside of your arm when your palm is facing up. I didn't need any surgery but I did need a splint and eventually the pain went away. Who knows I would get it checked out because I know at that age, it can be devastating. Check it out and let me know what it is. Make sure when he throws that he doesn't throw curveballs. He is still too young to throw curveballs. He has been throwing a lot of them then that may be why he is having all these problems. The more fastballs he throws the better he will be and the more his arm will develop. One more thing, make sure you ice his arm after he throws. Switch it up, first ice, then heat. I wouldn't let him throw that much until you see a doctor and find out what is going on. Hope this helps.

He is going to the doc tomorrow, I'll mention that to our doctor and if I have to I'll take him to a specialist, he's had too many problems with this one arm, and I'll ask him how it feels when he puts his palm up, did your elbow hurt too(?), that's what hurts him the most, either way thanks alot, I hope this doesn't blow his season, he's a great athlete ..........I was too..............hey we need a smilie that pats himself on the back

Yeah it was my elbow. I recommend a lot of rest and a lot of hot/cold treatment until the doctor sees it. I hope things work out for your boy. He will get through this. Sending my thoughts and best wishes to him. Let me know how things work out and what the doctor says. And when he does get 100%, remember only fastballs.

I just wanted to thank you all for helping with this, and actually some of you could be doctors, LOL, I felt like I was hearing the same thing you said from our doctor.............so, baseball season is out, no pitching, no outfield and only infield if it heals to the point of no pain, the area affected is his laterall epicondylitis, which in lamen terms is tennis elbow, ibuprofen 3xdaily and ice 4xdaily for a week, he's seriously bummed but I told him at least it wasn't something worse and hopefully he'll have strengthened it enough for next year.............actually I'm bummed for him, he's an awesome athlete..............

I printed out the site article Prince gave me, so I can give it to the coach, supposedly alot of kids have been in to the doc's for this same exact thing................

Just an update, more than likely he will not be able to play this year, so he volunteered to be assistant coach for the tee ballers, which his little brother is one of, I told him I thought his idea was very cool......and the coach thought so too......something good always comes out of a bad situation...........
