    Talking Personal Trainers

I am curious where you received your training and education, and if you actually went to school for this or took online courses, also what did you learn that you find to be most important in training and educating your clients? Thanks

I bet they found out a lot about what they know by just totally loving the sport and the idea of fitness. Most of them probably learned on their own a great deal of what they know or had some very knowledgable training partners.

I took a course through Can-Fit-Pro...here in Canada....but as was mentionned I didn't get much out of it other than a piece of paper...I've learned most things on my own or from other trainers and fitness enthusiasts...best approach is to self-educate and try things out on yourself.

I agree with ff, the best way to learn is self-educate and try things out on yourself. I have a certicifacation from NASM, for whatever that is worth. Also the gym that I work for in Manhattan gives us free college level courses in kineseology, anatomy and biomechanics so that is pretty cool as weel. But most of the stuff I know I learned on my own, just reading and talking to people. You can know all the anatomy and exercise science in the world but if you can't explian it in a logical way to a client then it is pretty much worthless. I do want to go back to college and get my degree in nutritional science though.

I am not a personal trainer by profession (well, I was for a short time many years ago)....but...

In college I took courses in anatomy & physiology, biology, kineaseolgy, diet & nutrition, drugs, I am a certifed trainer thru the ISSA, I have read numerous books, hundreds of articles, I have written articles, I have around 16 years of personal bodybuilding experience, and I have been active on this board for over two years, and I was a medical specialist in the US Army.

    is that enough?

oh, and for the past seven years I have worked in Information Technology, go figure!

MtnBikerChk (my wife) is a Certified Fitness Trainer through ISSA. The only education she recieved was through the ISSA self-teaching program. She has read a bunch of books on her own, but the ISSA material was the only "formal" training she received.

Well, you probably wouldn't know unless you've been here a while. She's not around here as much as she used to be.

Glad you like them. It's tough to find new ones lately.

The most education I've gotten really is from here. I (used to) ask a lot of questions. Lots and Lots.

And like IAB said, I've read a lot too. And I've helped my mom - that's the best learning experience - DOING IT!

David trains in the early evening when it's ASS BUSY, so we've probably never seen this curly redhead girl he's talking about. (Personally, I think he's been reading too many Charlie Brown comics).

No, when I stayed up there, I trained at 8 am and 4:00 pm

She was the lady that has her before and after pics up near the ladies bathroom. I think she weighed a whoppin' 160-or 180 and now she's like 105 and very sexy!

I would say for me it's about 50/50 between education and experience.

They are both equally important in any field IMO.

I agree............to have everything in one book is less time consuming for educational learning...........but definitely personal experience speaks for itself..............
