Bodybuilding terms used in proper text
Ok peeps I have a few points to ponder here.
1. What do you consider a bulking phase (maximum lbs. gained during this phase) 2. What do you consider a cutting phase(what should you look like upon this periods end date) 3. What is a weight loss program? |

My viewpoints:
I feel a bulking phase it a time period that you choose (say 5 months) to add "quality muslce weight" to your frame. NOT JUST WEIGHT!!! I have seen and heard guys that were basically overweight talk about bulking phases and they sure do bulk during this time period but it's usually more fat than muscle. If your drug free, you should expect a "bulking phase" maximum weight gain to be approx 1 to 2 pounds a month if your training hard. The key again is BULKING with QUALITY MUSCLE NOT FAT. 2. CUTTING PHASE: A cutting phase is for those pre-contest persons that are trying to get their BF down below 5%. (the shreaded look, contest shape including the paper thin skin appearance. Most non competitors out there including myself (expecially after this damn winter) will go on a fat loss or weight loss program prior to the finishing touches of a CUTTING phase. Think of this Cutting is like takeing a knife and cutting a striation in a piece of meat thus that is where that phrase came from, Getting the striations in the muscles eg: cutting the muscles. 3, WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM: I basically hit on this above. It's when you look down relaxed and you don't see abs, you look at your hips and you see some sort of love handles. You look at your cheeks and they are a bit full. Here is when you have to face it, your fat and you need to reduce your BODYFAT. I just hate to see the phrases used soo loosely because guys don't know what they really are. |

Here is an example of one of my bulking phases. I weighed 215 (ripped/shreaded) on Sept. 29th, my waist measurement was 32. October 1st I started a bulking phase which lasted up to April 30th Weight was 227 and waist was a 33 1/2. I gained some bodyfat during this duration but minimal. This made my dieting down phase much easier then if I had gained 20 lbs and 10 of it fat. I did a weight loss program for a few weeks getting my waist down to a 32 1/2 and then started my cutting phase which is much more strict including more cardio. When all said and done and my bf was back down to where it was the following year, I had a net body weight gain of 7 pounds. That was 7 REAL honest to goodness muscle weight gain. (this example was 2 years ago not this past year. Winter this year was not very good to me due to injuries) the numbers mentioned above were approximates and not exact except my waist measurements. Those I don't forget.

For me a bulking phase is a 3-4 month time period where I gain around 15-20lbs, and I typically do this late Fall, early winter.
My cutting phase is around spring time, again 3-4 months, where I basically lose the fat gained during the bluking period. I have not competed in years, but I think that these bulking/cutting phases are necessary to guarantee continued progress and growth, not to mention motivation to keep training hard. ![]() BOARD SPONSORS: ![]()

Sorry but i'm not as well versed as you guys but i feel for me a bulk phase is eating lots of good carbs and not worring about my weight.
At the moment im in "diet" mode trying to get bf% down to 14 but slow if ya know what i mean. End of the month will be the cut into my comp - end of Sept+ serious diet, no crap!! Taking supps to help etc... That my laymans terms anyway... ![]() |

Yea well your laymans terms are right on the button. Your talking about loosing fat which is correct and pre contest is cutting. You know more then you give yourself credit for my man. "slap on the back" (picked that up from you)!!! hahahaha

It can be done, some if it will surely be water but there are plenty doing more than 15 pounds a month
Would I call it healthy? Well not really... Of course there was ways to stave off the water. For sure though, the only people that can eat like that are those who are not natural or freakishly gifted, or maybe freakishly "cursed" with extreme metabolisms, 6'0" 130 pounds etc There was a guy who gained 70 pounds in a year, he is dead now.

I am going to have to disagree with this fire, a person shouldn't just be pigging out and eating crap all day and calling that a buulking phase, b/c that is just eating crap with a bad excuse. But a true bulking phase you can't be afraid to put on fat, it is inevitable and necessary to gain alot of weight. I wouldn't be satissfied with a bulking phase that consisted of only gaining 5 lbs. The whole idea is to put on as much weight as you can (obviously youwant to achieve a reasonable muscle/fat ratio), and then strip the fat off to show off your hard earned muscle. With that being said I think that you will obviously acrue much more quality muscle mass at 8-13% than at 20-25%, that would be going overboard, but you can't be afraid to lose those abs. Bulking season means its time to lose the tanktops and get the long sleaved shirts, start eating like a monster, start lifting heavy and burn as little amount of calories as necessary. Gaining weitght can be pick and shovel work that won't come easy, you must go all out. Just my opinion.

I see your opinion and raise you one. your phylosophy is a tried and true one and used by even the Pros today and even myself at different periods of my life. Although through trial and error and 'NATURAL' I have found that I keep everything I gain muscle wise with a slower gain and less stripping at the end of a bullking phase. Your opion like I said works and is probably the majority rule. but I'm more comfortable year round with my phylosophy. both ways work you just gotta pick the right one for you I suppose.

I think the difference is that you have probably been lifting for a longer time than I have. There is a difference in the sense of urgency to put on muscle for someone who is in the first few years of training, compared with someone who has put on the weight and is trying to perfect the physique little by little. I am sure that in a few years my bulking cycles will be a little more for me subtle than they are now. You are definately right, there is no iron clad rule of how to go about things to achieve results b/c everyone has different goals. Speaking from experience though, just ass everyone knows, your first weight lifting cycle will produce the most dramatic results, so after I went through my first cutting cyle I was stalemated at a certain weight for a long time trying to be careful about my diet and do things nice and slow. It wasn't till I sat down and demanded more from myself and forced myself to step up the calorie intake along the training intensity, then I stated to gain alot of weight, no dount that some of it was fat, but alot of it was quality muscle. So I make this point to the beginners that want to put on the lbs, not to the older guys that have been there anbd have different goals than the newbies. Feel me

Eating pizza frequently, and ice cream is way beyond being afraid of adding a little fat. On gear thats one thing, to a point that can be done, but naturally you'd have to have one freaking monster of a metabolism to get away with it. I can add weight very easily very quickly, with pizza and cranberry juice, and it isn't good weight. Same with downing a 2246 calorie half gallon of mint chip ice cream + protein shake, it isn't good weight thats a-coming.

I hate to think what 12,000+ calories a day would look like on me
The sodium alone in pizza would give me a heart attack very quickly, have to watch your blood pressure.

WEll ya gotta stop talking about Pizza Mudge. I don't think G8 was speaking of shit calories. (I'm thinking you already know that but making a general statement) Even when I was on the juice (that is what us old guys used to call it) I didn't eat ice cream and pizzas (with exception of a special health pizza a local place used to make for me. It was a whole wheat pizza and fuqing awesome). Peace bros!!!!!!
