Shin splints ! Oh the pain.
I've developed some *wicked* shin splints. Horrible. Horribly painful.
I bought new running shoes, a really ace pair of new balance, they feel like a dream. They didn't alleviate the problem though. I mainly run on asphault. Are there any tips or solutions to get rid of them? I've rested on running for about a week but they're still there. I also stretch for about 10 minutes before i run. |

I get them too, so I dont run. I have heard that to get rid of it you need to strengthen the front of the shin area (sounds plausible). One thing that hits this is a seated calf raise machine. You can even do toe raises with a bar on the end of your toes, soccer players are usually pretty beefy in this area.

If you try to run heel/toe, and watch to not slam your feet on the ground, that helps.
Also, there is a shin stretch that may help. If you step one leg back, take the back foot on the very tip of your toe and keeping it still, lunge forward to stretch the shin, it does it for a quick relief. Hope that helped a little.. ![]()

Shin splits occur when you are applying to much force to your shank (front of the lower leg...aka the shin). What happens is that the tissue betweeen the tibia and the fibula starts to strech and eventually tear. Seeing as how the main job of the fibula is shock absorbtion the tearing of this tissue creates a great problem and terrible pain. Other that resting and icing the shank there is not much else you can do. For some of my clients that have shin splints I make them do cable dorsiflexion to strengthen their tibialis anterior (the front muscle of the calves). To do this exercise set up a preacher curl bar attachment on the low cable machine. Then sit down and place your toes under the bar right were it makes the "v" shapes. Move back from the machine a bit so that the cable is taught and then simply perform some weighted dorsiflexion (pull the weight toward you with your toes). Other thatn that there is not much else you can do for shin splints. They are a real pain in the ass.

Lay off from running and ice the suckers. Also, check your stride. You shouldn't be running on your tippytoes. Make sure you roll from your heel onto the ball of your foot. Anti-inflamatory drugs also should help. Running in the military isn't as bad as you think, they'll build up gradually. There's no need to punish yourself extra hard now. Substitute stationary biking for running to keep yourself in good cardio shape during your layoff. When you do make a comeback do it nice and easy and build from then.

I actually pulled out my running guide for this. Asphalt is a TERRIBLE running surface. Since it is packed so solid, it means that your lower legs(knees and below) will take a serious beating. Other bad running surfaces are:concrete, sand, wood, and outdoor tracks. If you can, run on the two best running surfaces there are, DIRT or GRASS. Also, the fact that treadmills are so smooth means that your muscles may get fatigued MUCH faster since with every stride your leg is being worked in the same way. Hope I helped...

I've never accually had shin splints, but I've heard for my soccer coach that the best way to get rid of them is freeze a dixie cup full of water like HeavyLineBacker said, but take the ice out of the cup and wrap it around your leg with an ace bandage. When the ice is melted, the pain should be gone. I hope that helps.
