Sometimes I feel tired before I work out, so I take a nap to boost my energy, but then sometimes I end up feeling more groggy after I wake up.
I seem to have worked myself into this routine where I take a 1-2 hour nap before I workout each day. Is this beneficial or in fact a hindrance?

I dont like napping for more than 45-60 minutes, otherwise it ruins me for the rest of the night. I've had sleep issues my whole life, some people hit the pillow and pass out in 5 minutes, not me. I also require lots of sleep to be 100% mentally and physically, 8-9 hours, in high school 9-10.
So for me if I nap at all, it must be 60 minutes or less. IMO though, if you sleep properly every night you should not need a nap, I dont think most people get enough sleep. If you dont wake up on your own, and just about fly out of bed, IMO your not getting enough sleep.

What time do you work out? I find it interesting that you seem to have this habit for napping prior to a workout rather than after. It almost sounds like a form of procrastination.
I often take a nap later in the day after a morning workout. Actually when I get the sleepy feeling I really have almost no choice in the matter since I can’t easily shake the sensation no matter how much I try. It usually lasts 20-30 minutes and I feel like I am almost drugged and in a very deep sleep; oblivious to everything. Then I just wake up suddenly and the need to sleep is over. I feel as if it the nap was a very healthy thing and my body just grew or repaired some tissue or gobbled some fat or did some kind of metabolic shifting of gears or something

I've read studies that say for sports performance the best thing to do is actually train, eat and THEN nap for 45 minutes...allows your body to recover faster and shuttle nutrients where they are needed the most.

Well I train at the end of the day either right before or after dinner, so by this time I am pretty drained from the day.

If its working and not screwing up your night sleep like it does me, maybe its fine. I also train at the end of the day, because thats when nobody is there. I hit the gym around 9-10PM. I eat some oatmeal about an hour previous or so and that really helps me out.

I was watching a program about napping just yesterday. Some doctors were saying your brain is optimum with one nap a day between 1 and 4 pm ...either 20 max (before you get into rem) or 90 minutes minimum which will alow your brain to get past the deep sleep hormones.
Either one of those it the stongest for your brain.
