    Need some good advice here-

    Hey guys. I've been training since Novermber, and do to multiple setbacks(sickness, car crashes, etc.) I've only gained 25 pounds9 from 115 to 140), but it's almost all fat free and I think I reduced my bodyfat. Anyways I originally set out to do all this so I would be a better football player. Well now football season is coming up and I'm scared of losing it. 2 a day practices start august 13 and go 'til the 25th when school starts. The season last until the end of october. I will be getting off school every weekday at 2:30 and practice until 5:30. And since I'll be playing both varsity and JV, I will have to be at 17 games total throughout this time, starting both ways on JV and probably at special teams on varsity. Some are on friday nights, some saturdays, some tuesdays after school. I honestly don't know if after 3 hours of hard practicing, I can hang around another hour and lift, plus I'd be the only one and would have to convince my coach to open up the weight room. My quesiton is, will I get smaller and weaker during these 2 and a half months of off time if I decide to take off? Last year I didn't get any lighter, but gained significant strength during this time, without even weightlifting, although I'd never lifted before so I might have just been making begginer gains. I don't want to shrink!!!!

    2 and a half months, I dont see how you will avoid it, other than your young and maybe your body will hold onto it more. I tell you what, a 6 week layoff for me took about 35 pounds off my bench and it took me over 2 months to come back, I am just NOW basically back in the game.

    10 weeks, heck yeah, thats not a short layoff.

    If you have problems with sickness I dont see it being wise pushing yourself so hard doing JV and varsity.

    You are bound to lose a littel amount but this shouldn't be too bad of an issue RC, there are things you can do. You can schedule maybe one day a week to lift, any more than that and you might be over expending you energy between that and practice. Just pick a few core lifts to do that day like the squat, bench, and powerclean or whatever you pick and just do them relatively lightly no 100 max or anything. This is just to keep your body accustomed to the movements so don' texpect great strides in your lifts. Infact I wouldn't even go to failure. As for you diet I would drop back on the protein since you are not lifting and eat lots and lots of whole food protien sources as well as having a high cal diet seeing as how you will be burning lots of cals. Also I would think about buying some MRPs and sippin on them whenever you get a chance and you shouldn't lose too much. Hope that helps

    Sounds like a good idea, something is better than flat out NOTHING. Especially if your going to be running.

    He definately expect to make strength gains during his season but I know people who have done this and faired pretty well, they kept their weight relatively similar to what it was before the season. RC, the key is your diet though, I would try and get something in your body every 1.5-2 hrs. That is why I say invest in a good MRP as opposed to just plain protein. I know it is hard to have many real meals at school.

    Mudge, I don't really have a problem with sickness, but I get sick during the winters soemtimes because of a number of factors. One is I'm too stupid to wear a hat somedays. Two is that I have very short hair so that couples the hat thing. And the last is that it gets below freezing on a regular basis in winter here in northern Illinois. I have a question though, during your layoff were you doing any other physical activitys? I would think that I'd be better off playing foootball during a layoff then having to nurse and injury and get no activity. My muscles will be well exerted out there just not in the same way.

    Also should I stay on creatine dyuring this time? Won't an after practice dose help recovery and keep the water weight on so I don't drop ten pounds during this?

    And would it help to take glutamine as well? Im no't sure but I mgiht be able to find it in my budget to get enough glutamine to last through the season.

    Aren't you more succeptible to colds if your outdoors for a long time with short hair and no stocking hat in freezing weather? Or is this just an old wive's tale?

    Old tale! You do loose heat through your head, so don't get hypothermia. Bacteria and virius's are what makes you sick.
    In the winter most people spend lots more time indoors and transmit colds easier!
