I use a plate when I do situps, I dont do crunches anymore. I also do leg lifts for my lower abs on one of those machines where you hold yourself up with your elbows, sometimes they are also pullup bars on the other side.
Unfortunately though without low bodyfat you wont see most of your abs, but you can feel them.

Hmm, well I am fooled then. I would about liken doing leg lifts to doing incline benches, but alas the chest is not just one wall of muscle.
Yes, weighted situps do tire my legs out.
I would also ad, beware of pulling on your head when doing crunches, some people do that. I prefer to keep my hands around the chest area.

Since i play football should i do weighted ab excercises when i can so i build strength rather than doing 100 crunches and getting definition or does it not matter?

Building core strength is always going to be more valuable than haing a ripped six pack. I can't always see my abs, but I can do free standing squats on a stability ball, and pick things up without blowing discs anymore, which is my personal goal.
