hi all, im a 39 yr old {ouch} welshman who has just started back lifting after a 15 year layoff[double ouch]. I have put on weight and am currently 100kg but think gym scales are reading low
![]() I have just started the bloody atkins diet as i am a carb lover with a sweet tooth [doomed !!] My question is what type of exercise should i concentrate on to flatten my chest. it is quite big, 50 inch but looks like i have a very nice pair of breasts growing. It has started to flatten abit as im losing weight but i need to widen it as all the muscle seems concentrated in lower centre. should i leave flat pressing alone and develop upper chest which is weak in order to lift my boobies or concentrate more on flys incline or flat ? currently doing incline press 40kg sets and 120 kg flat presses along with low weight flys |

Your chest will flatten as you get leaner with your diet, no exercise will help "flatten" you chest. In fact, if you start training it your chest will grow and look even bigger until the fat has been lost.

Fat wont turn into muscle, so you simply have to get rid of that fat, which will take time.

There is a natural hierarchy to fat loss as to which fat appears to goes first. I was in a similar situation to you (but older – double ouch). I think you can normally expect to see the chest start to flatten significantly out at about week 8 and beyond. Normally men will see what appears to be a fairly rapid thinning in the face, arms and shoulder first. The good news is a lot of fluid is stored in the chest area too so on a low carb diet you will get a fairly fast reduction in body fluids all over – which will make the chest flatten out initially.
Be careful of atkins kinds of diets though or at least understand that “scale weight” losses are not entirely real losses. You should focus on fat loss which can only be detected accurately with a fat caliper rather than scale weight. The scale weight will bounce around quite a bit on atkins as you take in water and lose it back and forth. It can be disheartening. I prefer to go balanced diet (40/40/20 carb/protein/ essential fat). And run about a 500 calorie deficit over basic needs (about 2640 cals for your body weight). It’s slightly slower but you don’t get the wild scale weight fluctuations that will dishearten you as you will on the atkins program – plus you will have more energy reserves. Atkins will keep you in a constant 50% depletion of glycogen levels (fluids/sugar) which again, makes the scale weight drop appear fast and rapid but its an illusion. Just a friendly “heads up”. |
