I don't think you can build your neck directly much. I think it kind of grows proportional to the rest of your body and like wrist size is genetically kind of pre determined in accordance with your skeletal size. Hope someone tells me I am wrong but I think thats the facts. That said I added 1/2 inch to neck by developing more over all mass with heavy shrugs, squats. deadlifts, and benchpress. GH stimulant exercises and growth and upper body/shoulder/trap development seems to follow neck gains. But again, I think that there is only so much you can do for your specific skeletal structure.

I wish our gym had one of those multi rotational neck machines. They were afraid of law suits and took out the single one we had (just a rocking motion one forward and backward). I personally think it is critical to get the neck muscles developed to reduce the chances of injury in sports and car kinds of incidents (e.g. sudden stops and jarring motions). Plus it just feels good to get the stretch in the neck to relieve tension.

I love neck machines, I hate having a scrawny neck it looks lame. I am a little tall so even a 17" neck looks puny.

OD, I am glad someone also sees the benefits of a strong neck. I agree, a strong neck can possibly protect u from injury later. Also, since I started hammering my traps (about 2 yrs ago) often & real heavy, I get alot of headaches & stiff neck pain. (Usually in the a.m. or if I lay on couch to watch a movie, etc.) Nothin' unbearable, just more annoying.
I also agree the neck will grow as a side effect of training traps, shoulders & back. I just want to focus more weight directly on the side muscles (don't know the name) that run behind the ear, across side of neck down to under your adam's apple. Using that old machine, years ago, I went-up two shirt collar sizes. I wear a 19-20 " right now but I still want more thickness. Like Mudge said, "I love neck machines". Huge traps & a neck like a telephone pole, just really add to "squaring-off" a huge upper-body. I guess besides the neck machine, I just have to rely on side-effect results. Oh well.....that's OK, I wasn't looking forward to the site injections anyway. -kidding-

I hear you bro. I just did back and traps an hour ago. I lift very heavy on traps and lat pull downs – and I always get a stiff neck from it. It’s like something in pinching in there and I have to use my towel behind the neck to give resistance as I pull my head upward to loosen it all up again. I so wish we had a neck machine at my gym. I might have to go buy one of those chintzy leather head straps devices for myself and hook it up to the cables and see if I can get some more strength in this area.

    OD,
Amazing, I coul;d cut & paste your reply, change the name & it would be mine. I use the towel, especially during heavy flat, in & de bench. I really tweaked it a month ago doing doing dumbell pullovers on my back, you know..no support for my neck hanging over a bench...heavy weight & finishing w/ a cheater set...felt it pull/pop whetever it does. Hot tub & 1 hr massage helped but still annoying.
I was considering the "S & M" looking neck strap too.... Sucks....bring back the Universal Multi-NECK!!!

Yep, how about whiplash, I have actually had a mild case of it for a week when some jerkoff rear ended me. Without neck training it may have been worse, I got hit at about 40 MPH with me doing about 25, not a huge accident but it hurt the next day a bit.

My neck responds well to isometrics.
I push my right hand against the right side of my head and try to move it for 30 seconds then I switch to the left for 30 seconds. I then hold my forehead and push 30 sec. then I lie on the bench and arch my back while supporting my weight with my head/neck hold for thirty seconds. Do this 3-5 times and you will feel it. I learned this from my football coach in high school. Don't over do it the first few times or you won't be able to move your head.

i do a set of neck rolls, 10-15 each direction A year ago, I was driving in rush hour traffic, downtown Oakland. It was stop and go.Anyways, I was going round the corner and I had to slam on the brakes because traffic was at a standstill. Just so happened the asshole behind me in his new Porsche slammed into me at about 40m.p.h.It hurt like a bitch.Back and neck were sore for days.

I weigh 196, when I arch my back on the bench I figure my feet hold half my weight and my neck is holding the other half. I believe that your neck muscles are mostly made up of shoulder muscle coming up from the back so I do get some weight on the most important side. If I wanted more weight I guess I could raise the height of my feet and put more weight on my neck. I'm a homegymmer so I have to make due with bench, barbell, dumbells, dip/pullup station and heavy metal (weights and music).

Great excercise ML, I use it for front to back. I need weight on side-2-side motion & it is tough doing it that way.

    neck bilding

I added a neck size in 3 months by doing this: 1) lie on bench face up, head hanging over edge, hold weight plate on forehead (use towel for comfortbetween weight and head) and raise head up as far as possible 2) same exercise face down holding plate on back of head. Twice a week I do this 2 sets of each exercise maxing out within 10 - 15 reps. This also defined those muscles running down from behind the ears. - I hope this helps!!
