Lightbulb does grip make a difference?

Here's the situation. When doing lying triceps extensions, I usually use dumbells with my palms facing each side of my head (in other words the plates of the DB are facing the floor and ceiling). I can only use like 20lb dumbells and only get like 10-12 reps. If I do the same exercise with an EZ curl bar (palms up), I can do so much more! Why is that? does the wrist position have an effect on which head of the triceps gets used? Which should I do?

Virtually every dumbell movement is like that, curls, extentions, presses - etc

    Yes...

-grip can make a difference in strength output on similar movements
-different grips can work different areas of a muscle, especially a three headed on like tris
-you should change them every so often

The reason you are stronger on the movement is that it is barbell versus dumbell, there is more balance involved with d-bell movements. As a general rule you will be stronger on all barbell movements as opposed to dumbells.

in this case it also has to do with how the 3 heads of the tricep are involved when the hands are pronated.
