Minor Sleep Problem
Hi all. I have been working out for just about two months now and for about a little over a month I have had this problem with sleeping through the night. Normally I sleep 7 to 7 1/2 hours and I almost always slept through the night but since shorty after I started working out I seem to wake up at 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. and then kind of drift in and out of sleep from that point on. I am sleeping, just not real soundly. I have heard that a good nights sleep is very important as far as building muscle and this pattern i have developed is a little disturbing. I do not feel any different energy wise during the day, in fact since I have been working out I feel I have more energy. Is this something I should worry about? Has anyone else ever experienced this kind of problem? Just wondering because it seems like since I am working out 5 days a week now I should be sleeping more soundly than before.

I really like to take a warm shower before I hit the sack, to relax my muscles a bit. I lately am also taking an over the counter sleeping pill about 1 hour before I go to sleep, because I have had pretty much life long sleep issues (probably poor melatonin output).

For some reason it takes me a while (20 minutes or so) to actually fall asleep at first. When i'm asleep though, i'm dead asleep. The only thing I notice is that from drinking so much water I get up maybe 2 times during the night for bathroom purposes but then fall back asleep directly after I hit the pillow.

Lenny: Pfft, forget it, Homer. While it has been established that eggs contain cholesterol, it has not yet been proven conclusively that they actually raise the level of serum cholesterol in the human blood stream. |

Thanks for the replies. Over-training is a big possibility. Actually I was doing 6 days a week and have cut it back to 5. Guess I may be going a little gung-ho but I am very happy with the progress I have made in 8 weeks. I have read a lot in these forums about overtraining and i do not want to have all my hard work go down the drain so I will take it back a few notches. Really interesting how overtraining can cause insomnia. My first thought was the more you train, the more tired you will be, so you will sleep better. Thanks for your help.

Yeah thinking is a problem. Not to mention the more you think about sleeping or stress about not falling asleep the harder it is.

Regularity helps too, supposedly the most important thing is waking up at the same time daily. I will say that for some reason over the last couple months I have been waking up on the weekends at pretty much the identical time as the weekdays, meaning I dont have the ability to sleep in anymore, so staying up late on the weekends only makes things worse.
Naps longer than 1 hour also screw up my night sleep. |

I cannot nap at all. If I even take a short nap I will be awake half the night. I might sleep in about 1/2 hour later on weekends but that is it.

Since it takes me usually 45-60 to fall asleep, a nap for me ~60 minutes is not much of a nap at all
oddly though, or not, when I come home sometimes I could fall asleep in 30-45 minutes, depending. But I definitely agree, have to be very carefull with the naps. BTW, I read a book on serotinin recently and it mentions that serotonin output itself is responsible for proper melatonin production, and I know I have serotonin issues although I am thankfully nowhere near bi-polar. |

I have plenty of trouble getting to sleep many nights as well man, it sucks. I will be exhausted at like 8-9 and not fall asleep until like 2-3 at least. What time are you training at? I find for me the earlier in the day i am able to get in and train, the easier time I have getting to sleep at a reasonable time.

I prefer to train early morning.
1) Gym has less people in it so I don't have to wait for equipment 2) I really like the night, and I think a lot better while walking to the gym at night. My sleep patterns aren't really normal, I stay up late a lot, I've been away from the gym for a long time, as you can see my posts died off, member as of June 2002, I took a few 2 week trips out of town, that kinda messed me up when I got back, and then my dear brother Mudge changed gyms, so I have no partner, which is a really big motivational reason to go, so that you don't let the other person down. But now I am getting back into it, and I'm gonna try to sleep more regularly, and slowly get into eating better, it felt good to be back at the gym this morning. Left my house around 4:30, 20 minute walk or so to the gym, 'bout 40 minutes for the work out, 'nother 20 minute walk back, got back at 5:48 took a shower, slept, much enjoyed. |

Interesting thread guys.Hey Mudge,if you can't fall asleep try counting breaths backwards from 100,I usually pass out before I get to 85.If you start to think ,turn it off and count if that doesn't work count from 1,000 that'll put you out buddy. And if that don't work ,jump the babe.
Personally I can't lift s--t in the morning,I crash at 2:00 am rise at 10 and hit the club at 2-3..Takes at least 3 hours to the bod going. But that's just me. I suppose early morn is good for beating others to the bench though.Christ,I had a guy on the incline for 45 minutes yesterday, what a dead beat hangin out on the phone.I finally asked him if he was going to train or rap. It's like no one else existed.I think they should post some etiquette in the locker room. But this is Taiwan so??? ![]() |
