currently I weigh 120's and I'm thinking about doing freeweight excercise with 20lb. dumbells. Should I wait until I gain more weight and workout? or just start working out right now.

How much you're lifting isn't important. Weights are just a means to an end. You could probably start out with a basic program and just lift what feels right to you. But always make sure you are using proper form.
