    Knee wraps?

Howdy all. I'm baaaaaack. Nothing like a blast from the past, eh? (Shut up DG. ) Some of the old hats around here will remember me as being an absolute genius when it comes to training. Others, who aren't on drugs, will remember how clueless I am. Well, I'm gonna show my cluelessness again with a knee question. I tore my Patellar tendon a few years ago and finally had surgery to repair it last October. I've finally gotten back to the point where I can do REAL leg work again. (SQUATS) My question is, should I use knee wraps? I'm of two minds here. If I use wraps they may allow me to use more weight but my knees won't get any stronger. On the other hand, the wraps may protect my knees from any future damage.

P.S. Trust me, I've learned my lesson about using proper form so you don't need to worry about that. The wrap question is purely for EXTRA protection.

    Thanks for the help.

Knee wraps do not protect your knee, if anything they cause damage by the pressure on the patella. The patella slides across the knee and should be able to do so freeley. Granted you could wrap around it, and avoid it, etc., but then what use are the wraps? Not much.

In my opinion, with your history using knee wraps is the worst thing you could do. I have always viewed wraps as a form of cheating, they create a spring like effect that is only useful for powerlifters in a competition.

it is true however, at least for me, that using knee wraps when squatting will allow you to squat more...about the biomechanics i don't know. i don't know what Prince was saying but that's cause like i said i don't know the mechanics or the effects ot has on the knee and the patella but using wraps will let u lift heavier weight

I agree...you're not wearing wraps when you sit down in a chair or your car...which is a squat as well, believe it or not.

Might as well let your body learn to support itself naturally so that your day to day activities are better supported. No wraps.

Ditto on what others have said. Ditch the wraps.

PS. Good to have you back.

No belts? I've heard both sides of that argument also and think just the peace of mind a belt gives is worth it. I do plenty of ab work and lower back work but a belt gives me an extra level of confidence that I'm not gonna kill my spine.

I think most people on this list would say not to use the belt, and after some experience I tend to agree with them. I know I can squat with more weight with a belt on, and used one almost all the time, over the years. After developing back problems, I started doing them without the belt, and my back hasn't felt this good in years. I quit using a belt for deadlifts also. You may be fine now, but after years of using a belt, it could catch up to you, it did to me.

I think knee wraps contributed to the bad knees I now have. When I used to PL, at the meets when you would get your knees wrapped so tight your legs would turn purple if you didnt get them off fast enough after the squat... Used to leave marks on my knees too.
