Deads - bangin' up my knees :(

Every rep i do during a set of deads, the bar rubs/hits my knees on the way down and on the way up. Gets pretty sore after doing several sets.

Is this a result of me using improper form? Or just being rather tall (6'4"-6'5")? Or is it just something i should get used to?

lol.. i have scrapes on my knee right now.. doesn't hurt too bad but it can be annoying.. i'd suggest you start leaning forward a little earlier, before you bend your knees

I'm 6'2" and have no problems with deads other than they are a bitch on the cardio, I keep the reps low because of that.

yeah... i hear that. i feel like i just ran a marathon after a few sets.

anyway, i guess ill just try leaning a little farther forward. i think its gonna stress the shit out of my lower back tho....

im one of those guys who wears trackpants to the gym year round tho, so i could probably get away with tossing a couple wraps around my knees too...

I like doing SLDL much better, perfect for the lower back. But I have noticed it is not a full substitute for regulard deads

If you are hitting your knees on the deadlift you may not be bumping your hips out far enough before you start to bend your knees when you are taking the bar to the floor

I thought SLDL's were mostly for your ham's?

Yeah... i think my form probably still needs a little tweaking. I only finally added deads into my routine a couple weeks ago (although theyre already one of my fav lifts - regardless of knee bumping).

I knock the crap out of my knees too. I've tried several things and for years have just lived with it. Well, as I get older, my knees have taken a beeting from sports and lifting, so I have had to find a better solution. Try doing deads in a squat cage. Put the safety bars in right about shin level. I am able to concentrate alot more on the lift and not beeting myself to death. I am able to focus alot better on the lift and not so much on messing with my hips or angling my back in such a way that I am putting unnecessary stress on my lower back. You can still get down there quite a ways without worrying about this problem. Hope this helps.
