How do you prepare for a PR attempt?

I have pretty much seen 2 ways of going about it. One way is when someone slaps themselves, jumps around, etc right up until they hit the weight. I guess you could call this getting excited before the lift. The other way I see, which is the way I go, is just a general air of calmness until the weight is unracked. I more or less get a good breathing cadence down, close my eyes, clear my head, and slow down my heart rate (or believe I am doing so). I tend to do this in all areas of competition I suppose. So how do you guys do it?

I do what you described as your second choice. I just close my eyes and imagine myself performing the lift. Then it's a deep breath, get into position, and perform the rep.

I might grunt a little, pace back and forth in short distances while I psych myself up to kill something (not living). Envisioning it is supposed to help also (as studies have shown people who played basketball vs those who only envisioned it, vs those who thought nothing of it and didn't play it).

Depends on the person, some guys lift best psyched up (like me) some guys dont need too. When performing a 1RM might as well get a little crazy

I have never missed a lifted that I convinced myself I would do. Of course that is with in reason. I get pumped by getting all worked up inside but being as quite as possible and invision the lift mentally. If I have a shred of doubt, even if I did more weight than that recently I wont get it. Like when I first passed 500 for deads. most I had done before that was 475 for one rep struggling but i just knew I could do it and it I wasnt leaving the gym until it went up. I did 500 that day then hit 515 w/o anything but creatine and protein. End of the story you gotta believe

I used to walk away for a bit, forget about the lift and then come back and just get not thinking about it. Lately I just sit down and think about something that makes me mad, I stay quiet and gather all that anger and just let it off on the weight. Both work for me, I guess if one does not work one day I’ll use the other, depends on my mood.

I tend to get pretty worked up, I start pasing around and breathing real heavy. I get under the sqquat rack and just explode into it causing teh rack to shake. I don't do any unneccessary grunting while lifting, but I get pretty worked up before the lift. I get lots of stares and crazy looks when I am getting ready to go. It works for me though, that is the mindset I have to be in to hit it as intense as possible.

Personally, i close my eyes and try to concentrate on nothing but the metal that's blasting in my headphones, Nothing but the Cowboys From Hell (with some Metallica). sometimes i notice myself start to bob my head or stomp my feet real fast to the beat, thats when i know i'm ready.

then I convince myself, this is the last set i'll ever do. after i can't take it anymore and i feel like if i don't grab the weight i'm gonna explode, i take the weight and go to "Hell", as i like to call it (that extent of pain that only gets worse after each rep), and see how far into "Hell" i can go.

(this is the same whether im working a high rep set of forearms or squatting with a max weight for only 1 rep. its a good method, and it works for me)

*blinks at all the arguments going on*

Back to the topic...

I'll usually bounce on my toes a little and picture myself throwing up the weight. Sometimes i'll grunt or even just piss myself off by thinking of everything that's going wrong in my life. If it doesn't make me stronger it sure helps get rid of all my aggression and anger by trying to push it all out on the weight.

when i deadlift i lose my grip extremely fast with weights as low as 225 lbs, (1 RM is 655) because of bad wrists due to falling in bmx racing, and it happens every time, i use alot of chalk, its cheap and comes with alot of chalk, so thats what i do. my buddy (plouffe) is a big fan of the straps which place very little stress on the hands, try either, thats what works for us..
