Maybe he's just nervous with his first client......

what is the clients current stats? Did you do a client evaluation? I would start there. After that I usually take a few compund exercises, usually a push and a pull in all three planes of motion, and do some 10 rep maximum testing and take that number and figure out an estimate for their one rep maximum. That can help me set up there program as far as training intensity goes (ie what percentage of 1 RM we will be working at on a given day.). Then find out how many days per week they are going to trian and then come up with a split.......Is it their first time working out? If so you can get a way with a ful body split three times a week for about six weeks until you need to come up with something more creative. Stick with compund exercises and if this is their first time working out, or even a comeback from a long lay off, try and stay in the 10-15 rep range for the first couple of weeks to get there body/muscles used to training stress before going for lower reps.

After reading this, I wish I could train with P-funk Not to mention I like his lifting style(sets-reps). Gotta get big

I don't trsut most personal traininers because I see how they train. I don't trust most registered dieticians because I hear the advice that they give. The only person I trust is myself......which can and probably is the scariest thing of all.

Gal to train me? HAHA... there's no woman that's man enough to train the manlyness that is MAYO!

I'd be like, hey Miss, could you spot my 3,000lb bench

KIDDING!!!

I'm not huge at all, but I would be too self conscious around some hot chick in perfect shape telling me i should be lifting more... how much would that suck... haha...

Then again.... are their any personal trainer rules that say you can't date your client?

Are you kidding me????

Hot women clients can be uncomfortable.

I would hate to have a hot female trainer as well. There are some real hotties where I work and it is distracting just working around them. Then when they work out themselves it is no holds barred. I love it when women work out hard.....I think it is really hot.

Great answer as usual!

The only things I add to this when I do my client evaluations are a posture assessment and a ROM assessment for all major joints (hips, shoulders, knees) plus a left-right flexibility assessment - you never know when a muscle on one side might be shortened, therefore causing potential back problems.

You also have to consider training age (like p-funk mentioned) and their individual goals. Some people have such shortened function in their core and supporting muscles that they can't handle many basic movements for the first 2-3 weeks, even if they have been working out regularly for a while - because they might have been doing it wrong.

As for other trainers, I learned much of what I know absorbing the good traits from mentors and other good trainers - and leave the junk elsewhere!

Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.

The difference between winners and losers is that winners do things that losers don't want to do.

Obviously someone did'nt read the manual, or even bother to get any education regarding it prior to taking it on.

I am ACE certified, and forgive me for saying so, but people like you give personal trainers the bum rap that everyone sees in us.

Get educated then certified, not the other way around.

Full body routine, possibly circuit type training hitting major muscle groups, compound exercises, 3 sets max, 2-3 times per week.

you need to get their body adjusted to training, build up coordination, etc. don't over train them!

why am i sure you have no certifications at all,,, all i can say is have your "buddy" consult a certified trainer for advice... because training under your wings will most probably lead to injuries, overtraining and misinformed information...
