possibly cracked sternum, opinions please

I am 17, and was in my advanced PE class today and i was maxing out for a grade. I had just gotten 265 and the last time we did it i got 275 so i decided to jump right to 285, i ended up getting it but i believe i hurt myself. I dropped the weight pretty quick to help bounce it for momentum, which in itself was pretty damn stupid and when i hit it i felt a tear or a crack or something, it didn't make a noise i just felt it, it felt like the noise it makes when you're pulling on someones shirt and it almost rips. I finished it out and did get the weight but shortly after it started hurting and now it feels like a cracked rib because when i try to breathe deep i can feel it, but it's too high to be a rib, it is in my chest. it's a constant sem-sharp pain and gets worse when i do certain things such as moving my arms side to side or bending over. Any opinions?

You do realize how dumb this is:

You intentionally dropped 285 pounds on your chest.

You heard a cracking noise.

You are now in constant pain.

What the hell do you think happened? Next time learn how to max out properly and don't drop the weight on your chest for momentum. People get killed doing these kinds of things

I think he realizes that it was a stupid thing to do.

You could see a doc (and you probably should just to be safe), but not too sure they can do much for you, other than tell you to rest and stop lifting for a few of weeks. It's similar to cracked ribs, it's not like you can put a cast on them.

I know. I'm just always constantly amazed at some people's thought processes.

Yea, sounds like a cracked sternum. I cracked mine once. Someone once punched me in the chest when I was measley It hurt like hell. Anyway, the only thing you can do is rest and not do a damn thing. It will be probably 2 months before you will be able to lift again, maybe more. Just start squatting my man, just start squatting.(unless that hurts too... )

Was a teacher or some other knowledgeable person present at the time? If so, I hope that he told you that bouncing the weight off your chest, besides being dangerous, would not qualify as a legitimate lift in any competition.

I would think the PE teacher would know better than to allow a kid to try this without teaching him proper form and giving him a good spot.
