Theory Question about deadlifting

Does anyone here think that inorder to build a huge deadlift, one must have to train the deadlift directly?

Or do you think that you can still build a pretty impressive deadlift by leaving out deadlifts altogther but instead concentrating on power cleans, high pulls, goodmornings and shrugs etc?

Robert

I think there is a difference between impressive, and huge. I hardly see anyone do deadlifts in my gym, actually only one other person. He goes 5 and 6 plates, and I have never pulled more than 435 off the ground, but people still watch me.

I think for most gyms, anything over 5 plates is "huge," but its not record breaking unless the person is pretty tiny.

I'm competing in the 114 weight class (yea I know, i'm tiny :P)

But when I started training for competition i've never deadlifted before and got up a mere 285. After only three weeks of deadlift i've jumped to 335 (training for deadlift twice a week). My point is the best excercise to increase your deadlift is deadlift itself. Other excercises may help but for the quick jump up (and keep in mind deadlift is one of the easiest excercises to jump weight in) do straight up deadlift.

I had a thread on this a while back and a lot of useful information was posted by quite a few knowledgeable lifters. You might want to run a search for it.

Squats will hit the lower back, but without direct work I know I for one will suffer badly. I need direct work for everything, forearms included.

I'm the same way, Mudge.

If you check out bodybuilding.com's excercise section there's TONS of suggested excercises for your lowerback and any muscle group. This might help a little too!

I believe that for me is all the way around. Doing deadlifts help me do more in powerclean. During last summer vacation, during the two months I never when over powercleaning 275 for reps. but on deadlifts, I worked them heavy I made more improvements on deadlifts during the summer than anything else. When it came time to max out on powerclean I did way more than 275, I never though I would get what I got. And my thoughts went directly to deadlift; I was so used to dead lifting heavy that when it came time to power clean getting the weight off the ground quick was easy. The rest was up to all those squats and shrugs I had done to get it all the way.

well, when i first started deadlifting, i could do 365 like 6 times. now i can do 425 4 times.

you can build an impressive deadlift w/o lifting. but its also like saying "can i build an impressive flat bench w/o flat benching". if you have never flat benched before and you do incline bench, decline, dips, pullovers and flys, once you flatbench for the first time you'll start off with a decent foundation.

i mean there are a million factors that go into gaining strength, but mainly through hittin the exercize directly are you goint to really improve in it.....

You're a funny guy, Sully, I like you. Dat's why I'm going to kill you lahst.
