    deadlifts on a back day?

Do you think it would make sense to do deadlifts on a back day before doing movements such as the seated cable rows, and lat pulldowns? Also, what are some good ideas for a deadlift workout? I'm fairly new to deadlifting so I use moderate weight.

    is 3x5 okay?

my last back workout I put deads first and it didn't work to well. I did seated rows and pull ups after and had no grip power left. My hands would give out way before my back muscles. For bodybuilding purposes put deadlifts last.

I do deads first. They take a lot out of me, as theyre the biggest compound movement in my back routine. I think i'd be way too tired to attempt them at a respectable weight if i put them 2nd or 3rd in line.

I do chin ups first coz I find them hardest, after that I would like to do deadlifts coz their hard too but I do bent over rows before them to ensure everything is totally warmed up. Deadlifts can be dangerous if not fully warm and limber. Too maintain grip when going heavy use straps with an overhand grip rather than thumbs under! Definently do deads on back day though just find your right combination. One of my favourite exercises.

I have no problem putting them first. But I switch it up frequently too.

I have found heavy deads set me up nicely for a killer lat workout. I don't do them as much anymore but did them a lot while in the military.

Deadlift is a pretty decent back workout. I incorperate it in my routine when I'm sick of hyperextensions.

I do deads dead last because they take so much out of you. If I did them first, I wouldn't be able to give 100% on the rest of my routine. I love deadlifts! They are an absolute must for back development.

Hey BabyArnold - How's your grip at the end of your back workout? You have enough grip left to lift heavy?

plouffe-- Ever heard of wrist wraps? LoL

I did deads first when I did them. I would do 10 sets of 6-8 reps. I would alternate from regular to sumo, reg, sumo, etc. for the 10 sets.

I too, do my deads first.
Like stated above, it is the hardest movement..and I feel like all the muscles in my back are warmed up and ready to rock after deads.
I will then do pull ups, a couple sets with no weight, then go with weighted pull ups w/ straps.
If I am going heavy, I do use straps with the rest of my lifts...partially due to grip going away, also, I have I guess what is called 'golfers elbow' and do not want to hurt them again. (the tendons inside the crook of your elbow..very painful and keeps you from lifting)
Success leaves clues. People who produce outstanding results do specific things to create those results

Generally speaking, you want to do the heavy compound movements first in your routine unless you're going for a pre-exhaust effect. If you're looking for mass, do them first. Doing lat pulldowns first, then deads is akin to doing flyes before heavy bench presses. For a pump or shock that's fine, but for gaining strength and mass you just can't do justice to the compound movements if you pre-exhaust the muscle groups.

I hear many of you complaining about your grip strength. How do you expect it to improve if you keep using those junk ass supportive contraptions ala wrist bands, straps and such?

It's not back day if you aren't doing deadlifts.

Hey Oakridge Boy, If you use the kind of weight that I use you have to have straps dude. I'm not throwing around a couple of hundred pounds here man. Also you can do seperate exercises for your wrists and grip. I like to concentrate on my back when I do back. Therefore, I concentrate on pulling with my back, not my biceps and forearms. Make sense??

Why??? If you don't have the energy to hit your whole back in the same workout, then why do it. That's my opinion.

Oh pardon me? What do you do for your back then if you don't do rows and deads in the same workout?? Other than lats and upper back how do you hit the middle on non-row days???
