I've been a trainer for 5 years, and getting ready to compete for 2 years now. They refuse to hire me because as one of them said, "You will intimidate people and we want everyone, including the other trainers to not be intimidated." WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!!!!!!!!! Anyway, if you don't look the part, how will people know if your system works???? You go get trained by a fat slob, I'll train myself!
I agree with this, I was making the point more not to judge a book by its cover. I think if I was searching for a trainer to hire I would definitely take a look not only at their education, but also their physical fitness level and ask them some practical questions that they should know the answers to.

I am also a fat trainer right now

All this discussion of little heads reminds me of this joke.

A guy walks into the bar and sits down. 2 men further down at the bar look over and are amazed b/c the man is huge but he has a really really small head. So one dares the other to go over and ask whats up. He walks over and says, no offense man but why is your head SOOO small. The man with the little head proceeds to tell them that he awoke last night to an Angel in his room. She stated that since he saw her she would grant him a wish. First he asked for some sex, she said she couldn't do that. Next he said......................................How about a little head!!! (Ba-Dumm-Dumm-Dum)

OK, its corny, but it made me laugh!!

Some of the best trainers in the world don't look like they're in great shape but could smoke most of us at many physical efforts. Paul Chek is a good example - the guy doesn't look like he's in good shape and looks like he has a gut but he can stand on a Swiss Ball and do squats with 225 for reps.

Size also does not equate to knowledge. I agree that as trainers they should try to look their best, but not everyone trains to be a bodybuilder. That skinny trainer you're making fun of might be an Ironman Triathlete or pro soccer player. The "fat" guy you're looking at might be an elite class powerlifter at the age of 50. I also know lots of women who are "fat" - one is a member of my gym training to be a firefighter who can deadlift double her bodyweight. And she can run a 6 minute mile.

I'm just saying check into it before you judge a book by its cover
That is good advise but alot of people would not know if this out of shape looking trainer knows his stuff or not until they have possibly spent too much money for there services. I think the trainers are only hurting themselves by not looking the part. I would assume the general public is going to be more inclined to take advise from someone who looks to be in better shape than they are.

Another good analogy might be an out of shape doctor.

They may not practice what they preach, but they know of what they preach. (Personally, I'd rather see an somewhat fit doctor.)

One of the best lung surgeons I know of in Atlanta smokes like a chiminey....oh the irony.

Ponyboy is right on about how looks can be decieving.

Our mountain bike team had two "heavy weights" men who put in some fast times during our grueling 24 hour mountain bike race. In fact , we beat the Army Ranger team full of lean, mean muscle machines called the Bahgdad Express. Looks can be decieving. I agree that some of it may also be that for the average Joe who wants to get into shape, a somewhat out of shape personal trainer may seem less intimidating than a supercut one. However, I don't see how they would command the upper end of the salary for those who want to have the extra edge from their trainers.

It's impossible to find a trainer where I live, the closest gym is an hour away, and all the trainers at the Y, nice gym but no one has the look I want............sucks, I need a trainer for motivation, but then again looking in the mirror is a great motivator too

Its just a confusing concept to me. One of the main jobs of a PT is as a sales person, they are selling image. It would only stand to reason that somebody offering you services to get in shape, should be in shape themselves.

Simple really

The reason there are so many crappy trainers out there is because clubs program trainers to be like this. When I was a part of a chain group they didn't care about my clients, they only cared about the amount of renewals and referrals the people brought in. If you didn't bring in the cash, they would fire you and hire someone else who could sell better. Never mind how good of a trainer they are.

I don't sell image. I give people a healthier way of life. I give people better self esteem, better day to day functionality and reduced risk of degenerative disease. I consider my job very important. I am not a salesperson. I am a resource for those who choose to learn, and I spend most of my time learning how to be better at it because it is important to me and the people who are in my care.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm ranting, but it is because I really love what I do.

Ponyboy-
I obviously wasn't speaking of you specifically, but you have to admit that you are not the norm for most trainers.

You seem to have a genuine concern for the "quality of life" that you clients have, where most of the industry could care less as long as they pay there membership fees. As you stated above, PT get fired all of the time if they aren't bringing in enough renewals and new memberships.

There was a great PT at my gym that a lot of the clients had used. I even caught a few tips off of him here and there. He had helped change so many people, both inside and out, he was the ideal PT in my opinion. Then one day he was gone, I asked a pal of mine who worked the desk and he said that the owner let him go because he wasn't bringing in any new people. Total BS, but afterall that is the business of it all.

Actually, my first introduction into the world of PT was a real eye opener. I was working for a major chain gym at the time (largest in Canada) as a squash coordinator. They knew I wanted to be a PT and had just started college for it. The manager called me into her office (she was obese herself) and the conversation went a little like this:

"I heard that you are interested in personal training"
"Yes, I am"
"Do you feel confident recruiting clients?"
"Yes, but I'm not certified by anyone yet."
"That's not an issue with us."
"I'm not sure how confident I feel about that."
"As long as you are planning on it, we're willing to overlook it."

Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.

What is up with that? That is how it is at the gym I work at now. Some of these trainers have not certification, no background and no intention of ever learning anything to better themselves. Alll that the manger cares about is that they sell training packages. Drives me crazy.
