Will my grip increase like this?

Ok. As I start to add more weight to my deadlift, I realize my grip sucks.

Will it get stronger with just holding the weight? I do plan on incorporating forearm exercises too but was curious if it would improve without them.

    Michael,

Yes, your grip will get stronger just holding the weight.
But as with any weakness, you need to add priority to that weakness so that it becomes a strength. If your lousy in a subject in school, how do you get better? You have to work on it and study. Same with muscles. Study your body, make note of the weaknesses and work on them. Get yourself some of those spring handles first off so you can work your wrists while watching TV. Outside of that, work your wrists in the gym. There are several wrist exercises you can do. Strong grip and wrists are important to support many other exercises. I know if my wrists are bothering me, it affects my bench. So I work them to overcome this problem.

I tried using dumbells for wrist curls while resting my forearms on my knees. It hurt a little bit. Is it better to use the barbell?

I usually rest my wrists on my legs where my hands are hanging just over the end of my knees and wrists up. I then grasp a straight bar attached to a lower pulley on a cross over machine. I then work my wrists in and upward and downward motion. You can also do the same with a barbell. After that I do the reverse.
I use the same straight bar, but connect to the top pulley. I then turn my wrists around so my palms are down. I grasp the bar and move my wrists in a downward and upward movement.

You may want to purchase a bodybuilding exercise book that shows all the basic exercises for all your major muscle groups...
I can recommend one that I use religiously if you like.

What is the name of it? I don't have gym access so cables are out of the picture right now.
