depends on your goals. If you want to get stronger and or bigger then the best thing to do would be take your money else where, like a real gym, and do deads there.
they are probably against deads b/c they are pussies and heavy weights scare people.
The rules at Ballys say that no one is allowed to do deadlifts. The only person I ever seen do them there, I never saw show up again. Does anyone know why they are against deadlifts? What's the best alternative to deads?

Most likely due to the noise and possibility of injury. Although they can be done quietly, and if done correctly they are not dangerous.
Do they allow SLDL's?

WTF is this world coming to when you cant even do deadlifts at a gym. Do they allow rack deadlifts? If not, i say u take X Rings advice and find a real gym.

the only problem with finding a "real gym" these days is not too many exist any more due to the Bally's and 24Hour Fitness clubs putting them all out of business!!!
I wish I had a real gym close to me, the only commercial gym that is close to me is a 24Hour Fitness.
This is some shocking news. Sad too. Can't even do what you want in the gym. You pay for a membership I say you do what you want. People talk more than exercise and that's noisy too.

you cant be a bb w/o deadlift or squat.

When I went to a Bally's, most of the fucknuts there would drop the weight. Nothing like a huge "BOOM!" to break your concentration.
Wow. The next thing you know, they wont let you pray at church. No Deadlifts at a GYM?
Gimme a break. That is the ridiculous item of the day.
"Show me a beautiful woman, and I'll show you a guy tired of screwing her"
best advice- GO TO A NEW GYM!!!!
I would seriosuly drop dead if they didnt allow me to do deads! its by far my favorite lift! Id be switching gyms asap.

probably why Bally's "banned" the exercise!Originally posted by I Are Baboon

My suggestion would be to grab a bar, load it up with as many plates as you can handle, and start deadlifting away. After each rep, scream as loud as you can. After each set, yell "LIGHT WEIGHT..............YAAAAAAAAAA BUDDYYYYYYYYYYY.........LET'S GOOOOOO". that's what i'd do anyway......
see if anyone messes with you then........
You're a funny guy, Sully, I like you. Dat's why I'm going to kill you lahst.

No deadlifts at ballys?? I am glad I dont belong to that gym. Happily, I just returned from the gym and did deadlifts today. Dont know what I would do without them since it is my favorite exercise.
The statue of Liberty no longer reads "Bring us your tired, your hungry, your huddled masses..."
Now she's holding a baseball bat and it reads "Bring It On."
That would be my advice - start doing rack deads instead.
And make sure that if there is anyone else making the slightest bit of noise with any other exercise you get them to ban that one too. Ban them all.![]()

Here is a little story....
I used to work-out at World Gym, obviously a dedicated, hardcore gym, well the owners decided to close shop and sell off all of the equipment. They ended up selling everything to a "club" up the street, and directed everyone there for a "discounted" membership. So, like most we went and joined.
To make a long story short we ended up getting kicked out of this place, they tore up our contracts and booted us! They said they were getting too many complaints from the "club members" saying that we made to much noise and slammed weights around, etc. Which was bullshit, we just lifted hard, heavy and serious!
The final straw was one day we were doing leg extensions with the stack plus one or two 45's hung on the side, well the cable ended up breaking so of course it made a huge crashing sound and appeared as if we were abusing the equipment...![]()
i love it
I actually joined the fast-food gym of Bally's a few years ago. That was the only choice I had because of location and working a lot.
Most places seem to be filled with the circuit-trainer type of folks who check the hearbeat, and do light-weight high-reps on nautilous equipment. A lot of them wear outfits so they "look good," or look like they are at the "gym," whatever that means. I don't know much, but these folks don't know sh*t from Shinola....

Reason whey I started working out at my school gym again. I was working out at a gym near my home and to make a long story short; while I was doing deadlifts the owner told me I could not do them because they made too much noise. I didn’t say a word, I just looked at his face and walked out just like that, didn’t clean the weight up or anything. I know they wont be seen my face around.![]()
OK whats up, how are you people doing deadlifts. Straight leg deadlifts or bent leg? Whats the point of slamming the weight? I'm assuming that slamming refers to letting go before the weight hits the floor, which is cheating. But why go beyond failure in something like deadlifts? The lower back takes the brunt of both bent and straight leg deadlifts. Wheres the advantage in slamming the weight??

Actully it is not cheating. There is no eccentric movement in a romanian deadlift. The whole point is to lift dead weight until lockout and then dump it. If I am deadlifting over 400lbs I can't just set it down gently. My lower back will go crazy and my lats are pulling so hard on my thoracic vertabrae that it kills. So I do a controled drop, as I am going down I dump the weight but I try and kep it as quite as possible and I keep my hands on the bar.

you would not have to say that you have really bad form, that is pretty much the norm at a health club!Originally posted by CaptainDeadlift

I've never seen SLDL's done. Are there any major things to watch for for improper form in those? Like leaning into one side I would assume is a no no?
Rounding your back is a major no-no.
So are they more like rows or do you also lift with your back but while keeping it straight?
silly me... thought about it...d'uh

If I go in during the afternoon, early evening, they have crap on like, Macy Grey or Celine Dione.....so they do not upset the 'older customers' with metallica. (which should be the official band to lifting to......)

U should just do them anyway!
for straight leg deadlifts-grab the barbell shoulder width apart or a little wider. Starting position- legs straight knees almost locked, back straight most importantly keep your lower back locked in, perfectly straight for the entire movement. Using your glutes, hamstrings and lats lift the barbell to the final position. Which is standing up straight holding the bar in front of you, like a clean-and-press. Start with only the bar first in order to get the hang of this. You will see that it is an effective compound exercise, but never arch your back as this will transfer the load to the discs in between the vertabra in the lower back. Something that they are not supposed to handle.
