    Optimal body toning

Can anyone help me with body toning?

I am 25yrs male, 5ft 8 and 11s10 (couple of punds overweight). I feel that I am very very fit...I have run 4 miles every other day for a couple of years and I can run 1.5 miles in 9 min 30s. I also feel like I am strong, capable of 52 press ups a minute and 60 sit ups a minute. These are the only three types of exercise I do, and I do them very regularly. My diet could be described as average...salads and pastas and the occasional big mac or pizza.

However despite being much fitter then most of my friends, I have the appearance of someone 2-3 stone overweight. I cannot get rid of my belly and have too much fat everywhere. I am getting quite bored with fat taunts from these same friends as I have trained so much harder for much longer than any of them.

My question is...are the runs, sit ups and push ups I am doing wrong when it comes to conditioning my body? If so exactly how do I get the toned, 6-pack look I've spent way to long looking for? Or is it the case that if you come from a fat family, you're destined to a fat life?

I would honestly start weight training, get a member ship to a gym or go out and buy some weights. You will only go so far with pushups ( press ups ). Do some research and try getting a good cutting diet, and also check out some training techniques. www.exrx.com / www.bodybuilding.com -- Or check the sticky's out on the top of this forum. The information is everywhere, you just gotta sit down and learn what you're doing. Goodluck man.

if you are looking to just lose weight , then I would suggest sorting out your diet first. try eating cleaner food and less calories per day. as far as exercise goes cardio everyother day is good but if your not weight training you could do it 6x a week.
if you want to biuld some serious muscle then i suggest joining a gym or getting some equiptment and weight train. movements like push ups are easy to adapt to your muscle needs more resistance.

6x a week...why had I never thought of that? Thanks very much. I've read that mixing up the running is the best way to achieve results, i.e. 5 mile jog one day, 2 mile sprint the next, 5 mile jog the next, 2 mile sprint the next repeat etc. etc. I have to mention that my diet isn't awful, but those Big Macs are one of those pleasures in life! (once a week can't harm when you're regularly exercising, surely!)

dont do running 6 times a week man, you will be overtraining, just like you wouldnt do benchpress 6 times a week because it would be to much on your body, its overtraining..... and if you want to "tone" ur body you should lift osme iron man, because that is what bring your shoulders in a nice bodybuilder way, etc/...... start lifting some weights and do some research before that, it will change your life forever......but defenantly sot out your diet because no matter how much chin ups sit up or whatever you do, no mater how much you do it will not bring out your abs without that "clean" diet everyone is talking about, so good luck man and get up on your feet and go join the gym

This is false, especially for someone who has been running regularly for some time. I ran 6 to 7 days a week for five years straight and all it did for me was make me thin and fast as hell.

Football players practice everyday...so do pros in every other sport. If you want to look like them, you should too.

Definitely vary your workout. Do intervals one day, long runs thet next, and always warm up with a 1mile jog at a sloooow pace.

I wouldn't do a 2-mile sprint. I'd do this--it's called a ladder, and it will make you FAST and lean:

    Jog 400 meters
    Sprint 100 meters
    jog 400 meters
    Sprint 200 meters
    Spint 400 meters
    jog 400 meters
    Sprint 800 meters
    Jog 400 meters
    Sprint 400 meters
    jog 400
    sprint 200
    jog 400
    sprint 100

    cooldown

Or you can do "suicides" on a soccer field--start at one goal line, sprint to the penalty line, jog back, sprint to the half line, jog back, sprint to theother penalty line, jog back, sprint to the other goal line, jog back. Do this until you want to fall over or your heart rate reaches 200 bpm

Unless you're interested in running races longer than a 10k, there is no need for your intervals to ever go longer than one mile, It ceases to become an "interval" at that distance for most peopel. I'd say 800 meters is just as effective.

You'll also need to hit weights if you want mass and/or localized fat reduction.

Take a full week off every couple months.

Also, do you drink a lot of beer? Beer goes straight to your gut. I know, it was my downfall. I looked like I swallowed a bowling ball after a few years of heavy drinking. Thin body save the gut. It was emabarassing!

i would lift weights and keep running. It wounds like the only thing that keeps you overweight is your diet.
