If you just want to have a decent shape and be well toned then being extremely strong isnt really neccesary. It does depend on your goals.

The main thing is this: Each "level" of size you have requires a certain amont of strength (and genetics help of course). Once you reach a certain point in your journey, then you have to adjust accordingly. If you are happy and content at being 190 lbs with your shape and structure, then you dont need extra strength. However, if you want to increase your weight or musculature to a higher level, certain levels of strength will be necessary. Each persons genetics will determine the precise amount.

I train for both, because I feel strength is a powerful building block for making the most of my hypertrophy gains, and the average person needs signifigant amounts of strength increase to look anywhere close to the NATURAL bodybuilders. I wouldnt even try to compare to the Olympia competitors and such, because with the amount of anabolics they use, they are basically beyond normal human ability.

Finally someone else with sense enters this thread...

I understand all that prince
In a BB competition, how much you lift doesnt matter at that specific time

but in essense it does...if you can bench 500 and the guy beside you benches 225....most likely you will get better marks on ur chest, b/c ur chest will be much bigger

Strength in and of itself is irrelavant within the context of bodybuilding and the goal of a bodybuilder, which is competing, meaning it makes no difference if I bench 400 and the guy standing next to me at a show benches 375, in fact he may even have a bigger chest! That is my point. Whereas in a powerlifting meet if I bench 400 and the next guy only benches 375 I win!

Understand?

Prince, I understand what you are trying to say from the beginning, I am more or less kind of playing devils advocate b/c thats what I do. I am a BB, not a powerlifter, just for the simple fact that I have horrible strength genetics to work with and gaining weight comes much more easily to me than putting up big weights. thats not how I want it to be but those are teh cards I have been dealt. As for yoru comment above thou I have to disagree with you one more time. You say its irrelevant b/c a BBs final step is a competition judging his aesthetics, correct? I disagree b/c by that rational, a person is not a BB until he steps on stage. that is not logical. Isn't it the journey along that makes a person a BB? and if so, increasing strength is a vital part of the journey along? And by strength I mean increasing strength relative to that person, not a specific weight number a person reached. Again I understand and somewhat agree with you, I know that you know this. I am basically just makin this point for the kids in here that are making to big of a distinction between the two. thats all
