Because your abs are in use constantly the entire day, even while sitting. The muscles are made for prolonged exposure to some stress. I have also been told forearms and calves can be trained more frequently, but I have never confirmed the information.Originally posted by Budz08

You might not be able to get away with training your abs 3 times a week if you do weighted exercises where you can only complete 1-10 repititions. Most ab exercises are endurance-type exercises. You could do pushups 3 times a week without a problem, but not benchpress 3 times a week for the same reason.
